Following on from ‘adult’ things you can’t do, what ‘adult’ things are you FABULOUS at?

LellyMcKelly · 07/07/2019 23:17

(Lighthearted - and not rude)

In a recent threat we discussed the ‘adult’ things we can’t do (for me it’s gardening), so I thought it would be nice to celebrate the things we are brilliant at and take pleasure in(even the small things). I am brilliant at:

Making omelettes
Pairing socks
Throwing away stuff I don’t need anymore.

What about you?

Highfives Rockbird

Pascha · 07/07/2019 23:59

Folding a fitted sheet.

SarahAndQuack · 08/07/2019 00:00

Gardening, cooking (including the dreaded omelette!), DIY, authoritative voice. I can cook a four course meal for 10 people with supervising a toddler, no trouble.

However the thing I am most proud of and surprised by is that I can be a calm parent. My parents were frightening and often, frankly, abusive: I always thought being calm and careful with a small child would be incredibly hard, and it's lovely to discover it's both possible and actually quite nice!

AnneLovesGilbert · 08/07/2019 00:01

I have a good “look” that’s been known to stop rampaging children and daft arse colleagues in their tracks Grin

At work it’s known as “the look” but I can’t do it on demand.

SarahAndQuack · 08/07/2019 00:04

Oh, and to my great surprise as a dyspraxic person who grew up thinking she'd be unteachable, I find I can do really good hand sewing. I make patchwork quilts and can easily do invisible stitching.

My mum is dyspraxic, and I think she taught me, subconsciously, that if you can't do something you'll never manage it, and if you do it badly to start, it'll never be better. It surprises me how often you just need a lot of patience and you can learn skills, even ones that don't come naturally.

AlunWynsKnee · 08/07/2019 00:05

Pairing socks
Finding things
Fighting the system to get stuff in place for a dc with SEN. Really good at that...

Jsmith99 · 08/07/2019 00:12

Driving. I’m quick, smooth, safe and super-confident. I have done a few track days and off-road courses. I drive a powerful RWD BMW, and I love being able to slide it around under full control. Where safe and legal, obv....

pinegreen · 08/07/2019 00:17

Healthy eating. Not in a faddy quinoa and weaved lentils way, I’m just really good at making healthy, tasty food & actually really prefer it.

SrSteveOskowski · 08/07/2019 00:24

@Piffpaffpoff, I have to admit to being jealous as I am absolutely shite at parallel parking. I've been driving since my teens, but parallel parking? Nope, NEVER going to happen!

Redshoeblueshoe · 08/07/2019 00:32

Being a good GM. I think I should have been a better mother, but I'm great at being a GM Grin
I never tell them what to do. I will babysit at the drop of a hat.
And I don't care whether they BF or Ff. And all parenting decisions are up to them. I will just follow them Halo

BillywigSting · 08/07/2019 00:38

I'm good at cooking.

I'm brilliant at cleaning and if I could just get over how much I loathe it my house would be spotless.

I'm pretty good with money and budgeting

I have a 'the look' that has stopped children and adults alike in their tracks and automatically mumbling 'sorry miss'. Ditto 'the voice'. This always strikes me as very strange as I'm not a teacher, I'm very very tiny and used to be painfully shy.

EyeDrops · 08/07/2019 00:44

High five @Pascha I can also fold a fitted sheet! I feel very smug every time I do it.

I make fantastic banana bread. That's about it.

Gilead · 08/07/2019 00:49

I’m a ninja at undoing knots.
I seem to have infinite patience.
I’m organised.
I can pack double what most people can pack in a suitcase, same with a car boot.

sashh · 08/07/2019 01:05

Organising things, paperwork, children, animals.

Pancake making, apparently my two pan method is inspired

JWrecks · 08/07/2019 02:13

high five @Jsmith99 ! I LOOOOOVE driving and have to say I'm also damn good at it! Zipping through highways, navigating tight packed city streets, off roading through the mud in a huge 4x4, I love it all! Even DH has to admit I'm better than he is! Thank you, Mum, for forcing me to learn to drive in any conditions as early as 13.
I know my way around the mechanics, as well, changing tires and oil and maintaining. I've even done some fairly involved repairs myself. I like tools.

I can bake a mean... anything! I've even gotten good at the chemistry of experimenting and coming up with my own recipes. Sweet, savoury, whatever. And I love when my apron is covered in chocolate or sugar and I smell like flour for ages after.

I am pretty good at the internet for an old lady, too. I get the memes and understand the bizarrely fascinating hieroglyphic language of the kids these days.

I'm also very good at my job, and I'm very proud of that. I worked my way up from the very bottom to managing departments, and since I've done every position, I know a thing or two. I manage my personnel, and I coordinate a dozen or so systems and processes, across several rotating projects. They've got me working on defining processes for the company at large at the moment, which is honestly beyond the pinnacle of success I dreamed for myself.

@LellyMcKelly Thank you. This is just what I needed after the other thread! Smile

.
But I'm still jealous of you bottom sheet folding experts. Must be voodoo...

Onesailwait · 08/07/2019 02:50

I am awesome at being calm in an emergency. A few things have happened where I've taken control even though I'm bricking it inside but as far as my kids can tell this is nothing to worry about mum's got it.

Pascha · 08/07/2019 07:04

I'm a confident driver but I'm an even better director. When we go away in the car I always drive first and direct the last part because DH (who races cars for fun) is a great driver but lousy at directing and gets flustered with inevitable wrong turns.

Downunderduchess · 08/07/2019 07:09

Speaking up for myself

Pascha · 08/07/2019 07:20

Thanks @eyedrops, even my mum is impressed when I fold sheets.

Fizzypoo · 08/07/2019 07:29

My main main main adulting thing that I'm now really good at is mornings! I was so shit during the primary years but now they're in secondary (and can't walk due to us living in a village) I'm always up by 6.30 and we're always on time for leaving the house. During the primary years dc used to wake me up and were usually the ones running through the playground and just making it. I'm not sure how it happened, I just now wake up naturally early and full of energy.

I'm also shit hot at parallel parking and reverse parking.

And I'm great at cooking 'family' meals and my DCs friends love coming over for tea. Smile

iklboo · 08/07/2019 07:32

List making and planning. I could run a military campaign Grin

Ounce · 08/07/2019 07:33

I love public speaking, and can move even the most turgid audience to laughter and applause.

I look confident and capable (good posture, walk quickly) and like doing things (travel etc) on my own, which seems to impress lots of people.

I have terrific general knowledge.

Can't make an omelette to save my life.

DogHasEatenTheSqueaker · 08/07/2019 07:35

Being the house that people come to when they need a grown up (in fairness, this is me and DH combined, but our friends tend to head here when they need support/feeding)
