toenail coming off, any advice

I've stubbed my toe on the side of the sofa. My big toe mail broke at the top and is loose from the nail bed but still attached at the bottom. It bled a bit.

I've cut off the ragged bit
I've washed, disinfected and wrapped toe
I've wiped up splashes and firmly closed bathroom door so cat cannot get near any disinfectant
I am drinking wine (I know I probably shouldn't be)

Is there anything else I can do? any chance nail will reattach or will it just drop off?

I don't think nails can reattach.

I think a new nail will start to grow underneath and slowly push the current nail out til it falls off.

You'll just have to wait and see. Not much help, I know! But I lost a toenail on my big toe when it floated off in the bath, and tbh it wasn't a problem at all. It didn't hurt; it just grew back and looked 100% normal. So don't worry.

Thanks so much for replies. It's not hurting, it was just cleaning it up and realising the whole thing was loose - waah! Single did you have a bald toe for a bit and did it create any difficulties in walking or anything like that? did you have to bandage it? I always wear docs or Birkenstocks so shouldn't be a problem

My toe nail come off it had broken about 3/4 of the way so I pulled it completely off it didn’t hurt I didn’t wrap it up or anything. It grew again quite quick.

I've lost a couple through running. They usually fall off when the new nail grows and pushes it off.

It's an odd sensation not having a toe nail, I didn't like wearing shoes without socks for a while.
Mine take ages to grow back so open toe shoes were a bit of a no no. You can get false nails for toes though.

Really, false nails for toes? Does that feel better? I'm not too concerned aesthetically

I've lost four toenails in the last few weeks due to Chemo, really odd as they lifted and then the whole nail just came off. Better than having a nail that can catch on things tbh, I have been told they grow back quickly.....

Redcrayons · 07/07/2019 14:37

@midlifecrash never tried them, fortunately I've never lost any in summer.

It was bald but the new nail grew quickly. It seemed to know it was needed. And no I didn't put anything on it, not bandage or plaster. I thought it needed fresh air.

Mine came offs Nd is still growing in. I had a ‘bald’ toe but it was ok just more tender at times. I wore a dressing to start with then just left it. It fell off in February and is almost fully regrown. It’s a bit uneven but should grow out fine, just gutted I can’t paint my nails.
