doesn't have to be a false widow to cause major problems. My bite which led to hospitalisation was from a random house spider in Newcastle over 20 years ago

floraloctopus · 06/07/2019 08:51

Are false widows black or brown? I found one in our kitchen bin with a large, shiny round abdomen, at least large compared to the thorax. I'm not prepared to google pictures though so please don't share one! It was like a black widow but with no markings on the abdomen.

notaflyingmonkey · 06/07/2019 10:03

I'm glad I found this thread as I was also bitten by a spider and keep trying to convince myself it's fine, while thinking it's not. Mine was while I was gardening on Thursday and it bit me on the belly. I've now got an angry red mark with a jagged outline (like a xmas tree) and the skin has gone hard and itchy. I've been putting bite and sting relief cream on, but think I need to woman up and go to a pharmacist to get something stronger.

EnidButton · 06/07/2019 17:59

Did you manage to take a pic of the bite Lard?

Iamthewombat · 06/07/2019 19:21

Vicious (and cunning) little bastards lurking in bins and biting gardeners on the stomach! Who said that the spiders were rising up against us? She was right!!

Branleuse · 06/07/2019 19:37

its worth remembering that ANYTHING that breaks the skin can cause infections and complications. There is nothing specific to any spider venom in UK spiders that are particularly dangerous

3luckystars · 06/07/2019 19:45

Jumping spiders.

There is such a thing.

That guy I know that got bitten by a lace web spider in Ireland, we call him Peter Parker now but it was very serious at the time. I hope you are ok today.

There are such things ad jumping spiders. JUMPING.

babypeach · 06/07/2019 19:49

This is horrific Shock
Have spent years ridding myself of fear by reminding myself they don’t bite and are too scared to come near a human...now it turns out they do bite and they’re just randomly biting people!!!Shock

twistyturnycurlywhirly · 06/07/2019 19:57

Be careful. Over the course of a week, my leg swelled up so much that I couldn't walk. I had to have some heavy duty antibiotics. I must be allergic to spider venom. It was only a common British zebra spider!

twistyturnycurlywhirly · 06/07/2019 20:00

You said you're 45 mins from London. Is it Kent? We do have false widows here.

DickZillaofTheVilla · 06/07/2019 20:08

A false widow bit me on the cheek in Ireland. It swelled up and I had to get antibiotics. It was really horrible but more the fact that I knew a spider was on my face biting me then actual pain although it did sting

DickZillaofTheVilla · 06/07/2019 20:10

I was also bitten on the leg by a small spider in Jamaica but that didn’t get such a reaction it just swelled up with a hard clear blister and was a bit itchy. I could see the spider clearly crawling down my leg Sad

floraloctopus · 06/07/2019 20:14

Mine is about an inch long and an inch wide now, under the skin it's rock solid but thankfully it's not painful.

JaimeBronde · 06/07/2019 20:25

I think the spiders are cross because they read MN & are fed up with being accused of wiping their willies on 'darked on' washing.
Or you smelt nice & the spider was trying to lick/kiss you.
Or maybe it was a toddler spider having a bad day so hence the bite.
I hope where spider bit you feels better soon.

girlofthenorth · 06/07/2019 20:35

@Lardlizard are you little miss muffet 😂😂

I feel for you though in all serious as i remember grabbing a bowl out of the cupboard once and there was a bloody massive spider in it which I didn't realise til the bugger nipped me!! I was more shocked than anything as didn't realise they bit in this country.

SureTry · 06/07/2019 21:21

I had a spider amnesty going on for a while. This thread had made me feel like I need to cancel it 😩

PlinkPlink · 06/07/2019 21:56

I didn't think they did until we had a bunch of segestria florentina spiders arrive and make camp in the crevice that spans the whole height of the house. Only about a cm wide but goes all the way up to the roof.

At night, we could see their legs poking out...

I looked them up.

They have bloody massive fangs and can really give you a nasty bite. Fortunately, they pick places where we're happy to just leave them alone.

PristineCondition · 06/07/2019 22:00

Op is now spiderwoman

Or dead

Stillstrawberrywater · 06/07/2019 22:02

I got stung by a wash earlier. Saw that he was almost half dead on the floor of the stairs. I was taking a pair of socks upstairs to the linen basket at the time so I picked him up with the socks so to put him outside and it stung me through the socks the Lil bastard.

girlofthenorth · 06/07/2019 22:29

plink plink just looked them up --- oh how I wished I hadn't ....

Mollypolly2610 · 07/07/2019 00:06

Got bitten by a jumping spider in India. My fingernail was infected and I had to go to A and E. They squeezed all the stuff out and my nail eventually fell off. I now have to keep my nails short as that one doesn’t grow properly.
