Would you let a 5 year old unplug an item?

That really... if you had a tablet plugged into socket to recharge and a 5 year old wanted it, would you tell them to go and unplug it?

Of course!

You just teach them how to do it properly

Sorry to be ultra dim, but if they pull the plug out at an angle so that the safety pin is still engaged and then touch the lower pins, can they get shocked?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 05/07/2019 21:23

@MoodLighting plugs are usuall only metal at the tips. the earth pin is shorter so by time metal is exposed the earth pin is out.

Yes I would, although I tend to send the 8 year old upstairs for the charger

MoodLighting · 05/07/2019 21:43

Good to know! Thanks

LordScamperdale · 05/07/2019 21:47

Yes. How will they learn otherwise?

Craiglang · 05/07/2019 21:50

Yes. From about the age of three my DCs have loved "helping" including unplugging the hoover when I'm finished with it (their favourite).

@LivingDeadGirlUK and @MoodLighting it's the other way around. The earth pin is longer. It makes contact with the ring circuit first when it's inserted to make the appliance instantly safe. The earth pin also is the last to be removed when it is being unplugged so that appliance is always earthed, even when the live and neutral (current carrying) wires are no longer in the circuit.
