Would you let a 5 year old unplug an item?

That really... if you had a tablet plugged into socket to recharge and a 5 year old wanted it, would you tell them to go and unplug it?

"Hate" not had, typing with one eye on the baby monitor.

soarin · 05/07/2019 19:04

Would I fuck!!

Youngandfree · 05/07/2019 19:06

Yes, because it’s not rocket science and it’s quite easy to teach them how to plug and unplug carefully 🙄

Why not soarin?

TeaForTheWin · 05/07/2019 19:10

Sure. I was plugging in my tv by four. Heck I was making my own toast by five. Awful lot of people raising daisy children these days xD

ParrotsForLife · 05/07/2019 19:13

Eh why wouldn’t I? As long as it’s switched off and the use their hands and not their mouths or owt daft.

tisonlymeagain · 05/07/2019 19:13

Yes I can't see the problem.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 05/07/2019 19:21

Would I fuck!!

Why not though, what possible reason could you have for not allowing a 5 year old to do such a simple job? Do you allow your 5 year old to walk down the stairs by themselves? There's a much greater risk of hurting themselves doing so than by unplugging a cable?

starpatch · 05/07/2019 19:43

Yes better to teach him to do it safely ime

TeachesOfPeaches · 05/07/2019 19:47

Didn't realise it was dangerous for a child to unplug something. Mine has been doing it since he was little Confused

Pebbles16 · 05/07/2019 19:59

Er. I learnt how to wire a plug at 6 (admittedly not entirely usual and it was the 70s which was very laissez faire). I have a realtor respect MANY years later for an electrician. But plugs? They are in your home. They shouldn't be a terrible taboo

sqirrelfriends · 05/07/2019 20:03

My one year old unplugs anything he can get his hands on (not encouraged which is why he goes for them). Plugs in the uk are very safe.

GummyGoddess · 05/07/2019 20:07

Yes, my two year old has been plugging my charger into my phone since about 18 months old.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 05/07/2019 20:09

I had a dream the other night that I out phone 'pop sockets' on all of our plugs so that DC didnt need to go close to the pins at all, just grab the loop and pull..

I woke up feeling like genius.. the remembered I'm only 11 weeks into growing my child, so I have a while to wait 🤣

Always, always remind them to switch off before unplugging.

Scotinoz · 05/07/2019 20:39

Hell yes! Why the heck should I walk upstairs to unplug the hoover when my 5 year old, right there, could do it for me?

But I also let my 4 year old use the toast and Nespresso 🤷🏼‍♀️

Whynotnowbaby · 05/07/2019 20:46

I’m another who doesn’t understand what the issue is, my 3 year old ds loves to “help” me with the hoovering by being in charge of plugging and unplugging and I have recently taught my 6 yo to make me a cup of tea (supervised of course). I don’t think we do ourselves or our children any favours by making the most mundane of household tasks out to be something fraught with danger. Learning to do simple tasks safely at a young age is a sensible thing to do.

SallyWD · 05/07/2019 20:47

Yes

Thesearmsofmine · 05/07/2019 20:48

Yes, I let my 3 year old unplug things sometimes.

lilpumpsmum · 05/07/2019 20:49

@soarin why not?

coffeeforone · 05/07/2019 20:49

Of course. I'd let my 3 year old do this.

123testing · 05/07/2019 20:54

No. My fear is that he might start messing around with electrical plugs and sockets unsupervised.
Plus I have anxiety around electrical sockets because of many deaths in my home country and even though electricity is safe here I wouldn't risk it.

EnchentButteler · 05/07/2019 20:54

I asked my 4 year old to do this with the iPad yesterday. Never thought twice.

Lucked · 05/07/2019 20:56

Maybe not in the middle of a lightening storm (possibly an urban myth) but otherwise I am not aware of any danger. I myself take no care and put no thought into it. Is there even a wrong way?

Mummyshark2018 · 05/07/2019 20:57

Yes, I don't get why I wouldn't?? I would have shown then how to take it out carefully.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 05/07/2019 21:11

Yep. And I am a really overprotective/anxious mum (from my observations of what other parents allow their kids to do). UK sockets are incredibly safe. I have not one issue with a child unplugging or plugging in to a socket provided they've been shown how to do it.
