Would you let a 5 year old unplug an item?

That really... if you had a tablet plugged into socket to recharge and a 5 year old wanted it, would you tell them to go and unplug it?

God yes.

My 4 year old has been pulling plugs out from 3!

That’s the whole point of kids isn’t it? Pass me the remote/unplug the charger/get me a cider from the fridgeWink

ElizaPancakes · 05/07/2019 18:04

Yes I would.

No, little fingers can get between the socket and the plug and touch the pins while there is still power flowing through them

Completely false

rosewool · 05/07/2019 18:05

Yes.
By that age mine have had it drilled into them to always turn the switch off before they take the plug out.

Why not?

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 05/07/2019 18:07

Yes....? I ask my 5yo son to unplug the hoover for me and plug it back in when I'm hoovering from room to room.

SimonJT · 05/07/2019 18:09

Yes, mine has been doing it since he was three.

daisypond · 05/07/2019 18:09

Yes

sanityisamyth · 05/07/2019 18:09

My 5 year old DS plugged in and switched on all of my sockets when we got back to the flat yesterday. He also made sure that Alexa was working to switch on his lava lamp remotely. He's never once even tried to put anything else (fingers, pens etc) into a socket and has been told how dangerous it is (physics teacher here). I'd rather him using things safely and under supervision than wrapped in cotton wool and finding things out the hard way.

cocomelon23 · 05/07/2019 18:09

Without a doubt. What's the worry?

GleefulGlitch · 05/07/2019 18:10

Yes. Why wouldn't you?

Teachermaths · 05/07/2019 18:10

Yes, I let my 2 year old do plugs supervised. He knows to turn them off first.

Redcliff · 05/07/2019 18:10

"the whole of kids" really made me laugh! I would be fine with my 5 yo doing this.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 05/07/2019 18:10

Yes, why?

AriadneesWeb · 05/07/2019 18:12

I don’t see what possible harm they could do by pulling a plug out. It’s literally impossible to get a shock from sticking your finger in a socket, it wouldn’t go in far enough. And you can’t pull a plug partially out and get a shock either because the power pins are partially insulated.

Cecilia2016 · 05/07/2019 18:14

Yes I would. My 5 year old son does it all the time to his iPad and our sockets as USB

NerrSnerr · 05/07/2019 18:15

Yes. My nearly 5 year old knows to turn it off at the wall first.

MysweetAudrina · 05/07/2019 18:34

Yes, in fact I'm not sure i actively let them it's just something they would do. But then I let my 10 year old cook pasta, make eggs, bake cookies etc with no supervision.

minipie · 05/07/2019 18:37

No, but not because of safety, rather because I wouldn’t want them getting the idea of pulling plugs out... I’d be finding things unplugged all around the house.

MissPollyHadADolly19 · 05/07/2019 18:39

Yes my DD has been doing it since she was around 3.5.

Dockray · 05/07/2019 18:40

Yes. Wouldn't even cross my mind for them not to.

BertrandRussell · 05/07/2019 18:40

Yes of course.

trackingmedown · 05/07/2019 18:40

Yes.

And I find the idea of little fingers getting behind the plug and hurting themselves by touching the pins very endearing - not that DC might hurt themselves but because it shows such a lack of understanding of electricity. Rather like my (intelligent and successful professional man) who gets nervous changing a lightbulb in case he gets a shock!

PodgeBod · 05/07/2019 18:47

Yes. Am probably a terrible mother because I didnt even think it was a dangerous thing to do.

BullBullBull · 05/07/2019 18:53

I’m amazed people wouldn’t allow this

bloodywhitecat · 05/07/2019 18:54

and by the way, you can't get a shock just from sticking something into a socket, because of the earth block, you would need to stick something into the top hole, then, while keeping that there, stick something metal (plastic wouldn't do it) into the live hole. It is actually very hard to do. Which is why socket guards are not recommended at all, and it annoys me that schools etc still use them!

Yes! Absolutely, I had socket guards and refuse to use them much to my social worker's disgust. Yes, I would let a 5 year old unplug an item .
