Anyone up , feeling awful with a UTI (TMI)

Not a pee troll , have better things to do at 4.30am believe me .

Had a horrendous UTI last weekend , heavy bleeding, clots etc - treated successfully with macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) or so I thought , took 5 days worth as per GP advice .

Went to loo at about midnight - back to square one with heavy bleeding, pain, nasty smell etc . Have since gone about 4 or 5 times . I’ve phoned 111 who have advised might as well hang on until 8am now as not much anyone can do at out of hours centre, probably need a different antibiotic .

I’ve taken cocodamol and naproxen and an anti sickness , due another dose of the codeine at 6, but feeling very sorry for myself and fed up . I’ve gotten up and had something to eat (for the tablets) and now sitting on bed unable to relax . Am that sore down there that it’s throbbing .

I’ve got long term bladder issues anyway , on waiting list for a scope, self catheterise, but this is really crap . Can’t lie down , as soon as I do it’s like an electric shock feeling and I have to run to the loo before I wet myself.

To make matters worse I’m also supposed to be staying in for a council repair this morning , obviously can’t do that now !

Oh gosh that sounds awful.
Have you got a heat pack or hot water bottle for over your bladder? Same or ice pack for between your legs?
If you have some bicarb mix a teaspoonful in a glass of water or juice to neutralise the urine.
Loads of weak tea.

Sounds horrendous, I'm sorry Flowers

Can you use anything warm or cold that might help against the pain somehow like a hot water bottle or a bag of frozen peas well wrapped up in thick towel?

Sorry UTIs arent something I am familiar with. It sounds really bloody awful though. Will your GP be able to see you quickly tomorrow?

I’m hoping so , I’m hoping I can get a lift over pretty quickly as I’m feeling awful . They’re usually quite good for on the day appointments but there’s two surgeries (one three miles away) so depends on where they’re free ... saw a nurse on Monday for the anti sickness tablets and she did say she was concerned I would need a second course .

I’ve got some cystitis sachets somewhere- usually take them if catheter is v painful , so will try take one ... I’m also drinking water - lots of water .

Have got a hot water bottle too , am getting shivery now so hopefully that helps a bit . Don’t fancy this all weekend !

Maybe watch something to try and take your mind off it a bit?
I've not had one as bad as that but my last one was the worst I'd had and I couldn't sit still.

GP surgery have said just hand in another sample to the nurse , nothing else they can do . Hopefully the pain settles soon , I did fall back asleep thank goodness .

Poor you. You probably just need a different AB. Hope the nurse gets it sorted asap. Does your surgery send scripts straight to your local pharmacy electronically? I think they can flag it as urgent so you can whizz down and get going on the AB's fast.

I usually start to feel better within 2 days. Sitting in the bath for hours and just peeing into it (gross I know!) is the best relief.

My mum’s got an appointment at 11.30 so she’ll take the sample down with her , I’ll wait on the council appearing . I was tempted to do that last night (pee in the bath!) . I’ve had UTIs hundreds of times before but never had one come straight back like this one .

Yeah they can send prescriptions via fax I think, so hopefully hear from them before 6 tonight if I need something else .

I did thankfully sleep from 5.30 til 8ish , could do with another few hours to be honest .

I went through a 12 month period where I was constantly getting UTIs. It was hell. You have my real sympathies.

I found the book by Angela Kilmartin - "Cystitis, how to prevent infection and inflammation" incredibly helpful. Secondhand copies are cheaply available on Ebay.

I followed her prevention advice and step by step guide of what to do the minute you know you have one coming on, and (touch wood) haven't had a full blown UTI since.

As with all medical advice, it might not be the right solution for you but definitely worth a try? I also take the supplement D-Mannose and Uva-Ursi for prevention.

Hope you feel better soon!

fuckfuckfuckitall · 05/07/2019 12:02

Flowers it’s awful isn’t it .

Have given sample to nurse now so hoping I can be given a script for more antibiotics . I’ve heard of D-Mannose before , can you buy that in shop or does it need to be done online do you know ?

Urology said because my bladder is knackered as is my urethra I’m oretty prone to them . Suspect my catheter technique is off too unfortunately so thats not helping .

I went through a period last year when I had at least 1 UTI each month. I started taking D-Mannose in December and I can honestly say I haven’t suffered with a UTI since. I bought them from Amazon.

fuckfuckfuckitall · 05/07/2019 15:35

Surgery have rung saying urine is just full of protein and no other signs of infection - they’re not sure why there’s so much blood . It’s calmed a little bit but still blood stained, very sore and dizzy . I’ve peed about 30 times today .

Pressed send too soon ... they’re saying no need for antibiotics , just drink water and use catheter as necessary . Which would be fine if I wasn’t wanting to vomit with pain every time I put the catheter in .
