Do your clothes give any hints as to what your job is?

I've been trying to work out what my new next door neighbour does as a job as she always looks so smart leaving for work. She wears a black skirt suit, white blouse and a kind of small patterned scarf tied round her neck. I thought it looked a bit like airport check in staff, but we are nowhere near an airport and she is only out office hours in the week. I'm sure I'll get to know her eventually but for now I'm just enjoying guessing...

It got me thinking (I feel all Carrie Bradshaw writing that!) does what you wear to work make it obvious what you do?

Obviously many people wear uniforms. I wore one in an old job but it was just a polo shirt (no logo) so wouldn't have really been obvious anyway. In my current finance role the office is very casual so I don't dress any differently to when I'm at home with DS, so noone would guess what I did.

DH is a medic and in his current role, has to travel to and from work in normal clothes (usually jeans for him) before getting changed into scrubs at work. Again, how he's dressed as he leaves home wouldn't indicate what he does. He did once pull up on the drive with his stethescope still round his neck after a long shift, but he's never done that since!

Estate Agent, Bank or Building Society?

OhTheRoses · 04/07/2019 13:59

No, I have a senior role but it's smart casual. My neighnours wouldn't have a clue. DH is always suited but they wouldn't know what he does.

Pinkmalinky · 04/07/2019 14:03

I don’t think so. I’m a teacher in a college so I dress smart casual. I have a colleague who turns up in a T-shirt, corduroy trousers and horrible old trainers Grin. I just wear smart dresses (nothing special), skirt and blouse or culottes and a T-shirt sometimes. If OFSTED or the assessors are in we all put on our Sunday best, even Mr T-shirt and cords Grin.

I wear hideous polyester uniform (NHS) and usually have my ID around my neck so it’s pretty obvious that I do something healthcare-ish. The scales and stuff in the back of my car might give a hint too!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 04/07/2019 14:08

Smart casual here. Today I'm wearing a smart blue and white blouse, tailored navy cropped trousers and a navy jacket.

I usually wear smartish trousers and occasionally a smartish dress. Nothing scruffy or denim!

I'm a social worker.

'm a social worker.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 04/07/2019 14:09

I have no idea why that last sentence was repeated!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 04/07/2019 14:10

No, we're very casual. We did nearly hit a guy in green scrubs this morning as he ran across the road while we were turning a corner. I'm pretty certain he was from the vet's practice on that road.

EBearhug · 04/07/2019 14:12

Jeans & t-shirt. It is almost a uniform in IT, but hardly distinctive.

MrsBosh · 04/07/2019 14:14

@rslsys good ideas! You're right it must be customer-facing to be dressed so smart.

@EmmaGrundyforPM that sounds like a really nice outfit.

@Foxglove18 you must be a MW or HV Grin? I did wonder what on earth my MW was carrying on her back when she came to see days old DS!

Currently not working, but used to go out wearing jeans and a top and get changed at work into work top (retail). OH goes out looking casual but changes in to dirty overalls as he works in an iron foundry.

MrsBosh · 04/07/2019 14:16

@Pinkmalinky I can remember teachers dressing like your colleague too! How do the students react to that or do you think they don't notice?

@MrsBosh
I wonder if your ndn works in a post office?
I lived very rural and the lovely post mistress always looked like cabin crew Smile

codenameduchess · 04/07/2019 14:27

I'm a category manager but we don't have a dress code so mostly I'm in jeans and T-shirt unless I have a meeting with anyone external, then it's either smart clothes for formal things or company polo and hoodie for less formal (like meeting a supplier on site or a meet and greet). Suppose I could be taken from anything from high flyer to plumber!

DontCallMeShitley · 04/07/2019 14:28

I won't be any help here, I used to wear whites - either top and trousers or a white jacket.

Thinking of lawyers though, black suit.

DontCallMeShitley · 04/07/2019 14:29

Undertaker?

YesQueen · 04/07/2019 14:30

Probably not with my job! I usually wear a dress and heels and blazer or cropped cardigan

Magmatic80 · 04/07/2019 14:31

I mostly wear hoodies with jeans and trainers because we have enthusiastic air conditioning, and a ‘wear whatever you like’ policy. I’m a PA. the coloured parking pass in windscreen gives the game away though as v large local employer in a small town 😀

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 04/07/2019 14:32

I'm a copper and when I was in uniform everyone used to tell instantly - black boots, off-black trousers with sewn in pleats and combat pockets and our force used to issue these little pots of antibac hand gel with a red clip so you'd see them in everyone's pockets too.
The shirts (black wicking material) also had a white POLICE embroidered on each sleeve but we used to turn them up just so the embroidery isn't showing.
It's still bloody obvious Grin

Now I'm plain clothes don't think anyone could tell.

Kashali · 04/07/2019 14:34

I hope not Grin

Cloudtree · 04/07/2019 14:36

I'm a lawyer. I wear very high heels, a fair amount of make up and smart tailored dresses, so very polished but probably less formal than people would imagine given that I'm often in court (and dress the same then too). I suspect people would think suits are compulsory.

TheFlis12345 · 04/07/2019 14:36

Some fancy offices have a uniform for their reception staff that sounds like that OP.

I work in a trendy office with no dress code so dress very casually a lot of the time, people probably think I work in a bar or something! Grin

FrenchyQ · 04/07/2019 14:36

No dress code... I just wear whatever comfortable, as soon as I get to work I have to wear a lab coat so no one actually sees what I'm wearing anyway

feralfanny · 04/07/2019 14:37

No. I work in media sales and I wear jeans and T-shirt's to work every day.

Nobody would even know I was going to work if they saw me leave my house in the morning!!!

Butternutsqoosh · 04/07/2019 14:40

I'm cabin crew, my uniform is very very obvious so the whole village knows what I do 😂

fotheringhay · 04/07/2019 14:41

I've had two completely separate people think I was a lawyer recently, which is very surprising as I resemble a freckled scarecrow. My actual job is nothing like that, so no you wouldn't guess
