Do your clothes give any hints as to what your job is?

I've been trying to work out what my new next door neighbour does as a job as she always looks so smart leaving for work. She wears a black skirt suit, white blouse and a kind of small patterned scarf tied round her neck. I thought it looked a bit like airport check in staff, but we are nowhere near an airport and she is only out office hours in the week. I'm sure I'll get to know her eventually but for now I'm just enjoying guessing...

It got me thinking (I feel all Carrie Bradshaw writing that!) does what you wear to work make it obvious what you do?

Obviously many people wear uniforms. I wore one in an old job but it was just a polo shirt (no logo) so wouldn't have really been obvious anyway. In my current finance role the office is very casual so I don't dress any differently to when I'm at home with DS, so noone would guess what I did.

DH is a medic and in his current role, has to travel to and from work in normal clothes (usually jeans for him) before getting changed into scrubs at work. Again, how he's dressed as he leaves home wouldn't indicate what he does. He did once pull up on the drive with his stethescope still round his neck after a long shift, but he's never done that since!

Sounds a bit like Travel Agent or hotel reception attire.

Greenteandchives · 04/07/2019 14:43

Yes my profession is embroidered over my left tit along with the organisation’s logo. NHS employee.

DontCallMeShitley · 04/07/2019 14:45

I once worked in a law office and it was very much like that. Very old fashioned though.

I go to work in jeans, trainers & t-shirt - I work in IT sales, no-one would have any idea

newmomof1 · 04/07/2019 14:47

Does she work in a travel agents or Bureau de Change?

My office is very casual (although some people take this way too far) - you'd never guess what anyone in the office did or what level they're at.

Bananallama858 · 04/07/2019 14:48

I’m cabin crew, it’s very obvious to my neighbours what I do! Maybe your neighbour works in a bank.

Foxglove18 · 04/07/2019 14:49

@MrsBosh Yep, I’m a midwife! I do miss working in a Trust without a uniform a bit!

DH is senior management in a health club but all our neighbours think he is a PT (and he just goes along with it now) as he usually just wears a pair of branded shorts and some kind of T-shirt or hoodie. He only dresses up for head office or meetings and even then only wears chinos, a casual shirt and a pair of Chelsea boots.

WhereForArtThouBray · 04/07/2019 14:51

I would guess she is a travel agent or works in a bank.

I wear dresses or skirts and a top, nit especially formal. I work in the finance team for a construction company.

Sarahlou63 · 04/07/2019 14:52

I wear hay in my hair and horse snot across my t-shirt. Betcha can't guess what I do! Grin

floribunda18 · 04/07/2019 14:52

The only time someone guessed my job they asked whether I work in fashion! I am a lawyer but not in a law firm. I wear smart casual most of the time, culottes and a linen shirt today.

QuestionableMouse · 04/07/2019 14:54

I wear uniform so it's easy to tell who pays my wages. Half the time though I'll stick a tshirt on rather than driving to work in my shirt.

MadisonMontgomery · 04/07/2019 14:55

I’m a GP secretary and I wear a navy skirt with a patterned polyester blouse - not sure if most people would work out where I work from the uniform but I can spot a fellow GP admin from a mile off - there’s only about 10 different blouse patterns on offer!

BiddyPop · 04/07/2019 14:55

Not really. Between informal and formal office attire mostly, and smart casual on Fridays (dark jeans and a nice top or a casual but neat dress over leggings usually). My "uniform" look is black trousers with a plain coloured top and a cardigan or jacket over it, or a plain polo neck jumper (depending on the formality of the day and diary). But I am trying to wear more dresses - they are mostly office attire type. Today is a quite formal black dress - because the choir were singing at lunch and we were all asked to wear black but it's too hot for trousers, so sleeveless dress it is!

In terms of guessing my actual role, nah, most people haven't a clue!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/07/2019 14:56

My MIL was the receptionist/secretary at a Housing Association and had a similar 'uniform'.

DH in the Army leaves the house in Kevlar jeans, leather jacket and motorbike helmet.

MrsBosh · 04/07/2019 14:56

You've all got much better imagination that me! She's moved in alone - no partner or little kids so if I want to know I will just have to make conversation, noone else to ask!

I love the idea of a little 'POLICE' embroidered on sleeves Grin.

Those of you with uniforms? Do you have to pay for them? DH's got two sets of scrubs for work (free) BUT he has to wash them himself at home Shock. I think all trusts will have different policies on this though.

@floribunda18, that's a big compliment!

@MadisonMontgomery, do you all wear the same pattern at your practice or can you choose?

DD's (7) friend came for a playdate a few weeks ago and wanted to know why I looked like her teachers?....I'm a teacher! Confused

DonkeyHohtay · 04/07/2019 14:59

I'm self employed and work from home. I don't have work clothes and home clothes, just clothes.

Most people think I'm a Sahm.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 04/07/2019 15:00

I'm retired. I'm pretty sure the postman has worked this out because when I answer the doer to him at 9am I'm still in my dressing gown. At least, I hope that's what he assumes...😧

DramaRamaLlama · 04/07/2019 15:00

Another lawyer - although I don't think you'd guess what I did if you saw me although truthfully I do tend to dress expensively and that gets commented on.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 04/07/2019 15:00

*door not doer.

FortunaMajor · 04/07/2019 15:07

Our local council admin staff have a neck scarf. They can wear anything smart and black with the council's scarf or tie to show they work there.

toldmywrath · 04/07/2019 15:09

I work in confined spaces (some of the time) so I'm often dressed for summer in the middle of winter.

Confuzzlediddled · 04/07/2019 15:15

I wear either office smart if I have meetings or jeans and a top if I don't - I work on the sewage branch of a water company 😁 not actually down the sewers though thankfully!

MadisonMontgomery · 04/07/2019 15:35

@MrsBosh we all wear the same pattern, there’s 3 different styles though. Basically there are 3 suppliers, different surgeries & also pharmacies wear different patterns and if we want to change we have to check that none of the local ones are already wearing the pattern we want to swap to.
