Do your clothes give any hints as to what your job is?

I've been trying to work out what my new next door neighbour does as a job as she always looks so smart leaving for work. She wears a black skirt suit, white blouse and a kind of small patterned scarf tied round her neck. I thought it looked a bit like airport check in staff, but we are nowhere near an airport and she is only out office hours in the week. I'm sure I'll get to know her eventually but for now I'm just enjoying guessing...

It got me thinking (I feel all Carrie Bradshaw writing that!) does what you wear to work make it obvious what you do?

Obviously many people wear uniforms. I wore one in an old job but it was just a polo shirt (no logo) so wouldn't have really been obvious anyway. In my current finance role the office is very casual so I don't dress any differently to when I'm at home with DS, so noone would guess what I did.

DH is a medic and in his current role, has to travel to and from work in normal clothes (usually jeans for him) before getting changed into scrubs at work. Again, how he's dressed as he leaves home wouldn't indicate what he does. He did once pull up on the drive with his stethescope still round his neck after a long shift, but he's never done that since!

sounds like building society to me, pretty sure Nationwide staff wear something like that.

I wear whatever I like to work - you wouldn't know if I was going to the supermarket or going to work.

NorthEndGal · 04/07/2019 15:45

When I'm working, yes, as my work clothes have paint streaks and stains on them

confusedofengland · 04/07/2019 15:48

Smart casual here - leggings & floaty top, jeans & smart t-shirt, denim skirt & smart t-shirt. I avoid open shoes, wear pumps or ballet flats, maybe boots in winter. I also don't wear strappy tops/dresses although sleeveless is fine.

I work in a library.

In work I can wear what I like - current job government so smart casual. Previous roles have been in accountants and law firms so much smarter, work dresses and suits.

cakesandphotos · 04/07/2019 16:32

I'm at work currently and I'm wearing a casual shirt, jeans and a pair of slippers Grin

Iamthewombat · 04/07/2019 16:37

I bloody hope not (accountant).

Agree that your neighbour sounds as if she might work on reception somewhere: it is rare to find suits worn at work now.

I’m a stay at home mum to a 6 month old and a just turned 2 year old. My clothes are casual, usually leggings and a tunic dress, usually with some baby sick or sticky toddler handprints on. I think it’s quite clear I’m a sahm 😂 although some of my mum friends are immaculately groomed.

Speakercube · 04/07/2019 19:39

Dont think anyone would guess what I do as sometimes I go in smart and other days practical depending what Im doing that day-sometimes visiting clients or going to meetings or visiting a building site/ works being undertaken. Never really thought that my neighbourd would be that interested! Smile

Equimum · 04/07/2019 20:25

I’m not currently working, but you’d never know what DH does. He usually wear chinos and a smart-casual shirt. He’s a senioe manager in an international company. They have a casual work-wear policy.

MidsomerBurgers · 04/07/2019 20:34

I wear leggings, a tshirt (or jumper) and trainers to work.

I doubt the neighbours would guess that I'm a nurse. I get changed at work.

myidentitymycrisis · 04/07/2019 20:58

I wear trousers or decent jeans and a top/blouse with flat shoes that I can run in. I work part office /part in the community and home visiting so I need to be flexible.

WifOfBif · 04/07/2019 21:08

Ripped jeans and a vest top today.

Work with children leaving care.

Youngandfree · 04/07/2019 21:12

Jeans, jumper or top and converse/ slip on shoes usually for me!! What am I??

Youngandfree · 04/07/2019 21:15

Posted too soon....I’m a primary teacher

stucknoue · 04/07/2019 21:19

She could be a barrister or solicitor, the former have to wear black in court
I suspect my clothes are a bit of a give away if you know about me as I tend to wear relatively modest outfits - I work for a church

MotherOfTheNoise · 04/07/2019 21:29

You'd know my staff, as they have pinafores and have to wear smart black, but I just wear whatever so you'd never guess! Although, I always have a wine opener in my pocket and a biro stuck somewhere in my hair...

StressToy · 04/07/2019 22:30

Academic. We’re supposed to look as if we’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards, because of our dedication to the Life of the Mind.

Today I wore Converse, wide-legged trousers and a very old asymmetric Cos blouse. If it’s a writing day at home, it’s more like knackered jeans and a Fleetwood Mac tee shirt. God knows what anyone thinks I do.

isseywithcats · 04/07/2019 22:33

i went to work today in an alice cooper tour tee shirt and jeans
my job is sitting in an office in a charity shop running the ebay page for them, so as im not public facing i can wear very casual clothes

Iamthewombat · 04/07/2019 22:33

Mother of the noise is a mother superior! You heard it here first.

DC90 · 04/07/2019 22:38

It depends what meetings, groups or activities I have that day. Some days I wear a smart blouse with trousers and a blazer other days it's a tshirt and jeans. I'm a youth, family and community officer.

RainbowBrite41 · 04/07/2019 22:38

I think she’s a travel agent! Casual jersey dress and lace up pumps for me today - Primary HT, smallish school and very much on the ‘shop floor’!

delilahbucket · 04/07/2019 22:41

I'm self employed and live in jeans and t-shirts. I'm fairly certain 95% of the parents I see at school think I don't work.

AtSea1979 · 04/07/2019 22:46

You’d have to be pretty savvy in my area to come close to guessing. I dress all in black, joggers, trainers, T-shirt etc. Too casual for funeral related!
I work with people with autism, we dress in black to reduce sensory overload.

motortroll · 04/07/2019 22:48

Teacher here. Hopefully you can tell when I'm dressed for work but I'm super scruffy when I'm not at work so I don't look very professional. Tbh I probably look just like a middle aged teacher lol

My husband is a director of his own sales type company. He wears a band T-shirt jeans and cons to work and has a massive scruffy beard. You'd definitely never guess what he did. He looks like a roadie.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 04/07/2019 22:51

I should hope so, I have the company logo plastered across my tit!
