Sports for non-sporty children?

It is Sports Day today for us, and my 5.5yo DS has been dreading it. Like me, he isn’t a great runner. I really don’t want him to think that he is rubbish at sport, though, as I am sure there are sports he could be good at. I was always told I was rubbish at sport, and consequently always hated it at school.

Any suggestions for Sports that a skinny slow runner could be good at?

We are in London, so I guess most things are available.

Many thanks!

I agree with pp about ParkRun.

I hated sport at school, especially running. Was asthmatic and fat and therefore very, very slow. Anything that involved running was a nightmare because all the teachers would do would tell me to run faster and I couldn't. I'd try, but just get out of breath.

Two years ago I did C25K. A year later I ran a half marathon and thoroughly enjoyed every step. I'm still not fast but that doesn't matter. I'm competing against no-one but myself. The most important thing, however, is to go as slowly as possibly, especially at the beginning.

What I'm trying to say is that he may find he enjoys running if he can go slowly. By doing so, and building up the distance, he'll improve his fitness.
