Can blond hair turn red?

HalfBearOtherHalfCat · 03/07/2019 05:01

Settle a very minor disagreement for me?

I have a son. He is blond. My mother keeps hopefully insisting the blond will surely turn red and swears his hair already looks a bit red in certain lights. I keep saying that at almost four years old it is a bit late now for a color change and that DH was red haired at birth.

Anyone have a child who went red later on? Or am I right?

I have one who was born with a reddish tinge and went blond by 1. Other red head was most definitely a red head since day1.

At 4, it's unlikely. Why's she so desperate for the child to have red hair? Both parents need the gene to create a red headed baby. If you have no other red heads on your side of the family, it's not happening.

Interesting mix of responses. So unlikely but not actually impossible then by the sound of it?

There is red hair in my family too, so the gene is likely there - a couple of cousins on my dad's side, and my maternal grandmother was a redhead - which may play a part in why my mother thinks a red-haired grandson would be nice.

I must admit I initially thought DS would have red hair, as he had sort of peach colored fuzz when he was born. But he was definitely blond when he started getting hair properly. I guess we'll have to wait and see who is right on this one!

Does it matter. You’ll find out soon enough

DonkeyHohtay · 03/07/2019 08:50

It's a recessive gene though - I had two blondes before a red head. The two blondes are carrying the gene though so depending on their choice of partners in the future I might get red headed grandchildren- who knows.

We got so many positive comments on my red heads hair when he was little.

Hair often goes darker so it could go reddish. Both mine went from blonde to light brown.

Namechange8471 · 03/07/2019 08:54

My dd was born with brown hair. She was red by 6 months. Now aged 10 it's a ginger/ brown colour, and still changing.

I was born with black hair, which turned blonde then moist brown.

CoraPirbright · 03/07/2019 09:14

Mine were red-tinged at birth then blonde til c 5/6 then darker blonde/light brown.

I do remember though the actor Simon Woods (from the Matthew McFadyen Pride and Prejudice). He was blond and they made him dye his hair to a light red and then he complained that it seemed to stay that colour naturally!!

amusedbush · 03/07/2019 09:23

My brother had golden blonde hair until he was about 8, then it started turning darker and he has had mouse brown hair ever since. I suppose it can take a long time to settle.

PhillipeFellope · 03/07/2019 09:53

Genetics are amazing! Ds was born strawberry blonde, he goes between very blonde and strawberry blonde depending on time of year. He's 2.6. Both DH and I are very dark haired and eyes so this blonde, blue eyed child came as a surprise Grin

Damntheman · 03/07/2019 11:06

It's possible. I have a blonde friend whose red did not show at all until he grew in his beard, beard hair? Red!

twinkletoedelephant · 03/07/2019 11:09

I was white blond untill about 8..... has got darker and darker red.. you can see the change in my school photos :)

MrsScamander · 03/07/2019 11:35

Not quite the same but I went from golden blonde to ginger at age 13, so it can happen.

DD2 is 16 months and has white blonde hair at the moment, with an orange tinge on the tips. I think she'll go red, she had tufts of ginger hair when she was born. I was devastated when it fell out.

I keep saying that at almost four years old it is a bit late now for a color change

2 of my blonde DC got progressively darker, DS is now 16 and has a bit of a red tinge which didn't appear until he was about 12!

I thought it was normal for hair to change colour over the years, I mean mine used to be brown and is half white now Blush

MunchMunch · 03/07/2019 12:15

Ds2 is blonde/light brown but when I look through his hair he has the odd really ginger hair.

Dd has medium/dark brown hair but has always had an ginger tone especially when the sunlight shines on it.

There aren't any red heads that I'm aware of on my side of the family but dp has two ginger haired cousins (siblings)

BillywigSting · 03/07/2019 12:18

Mine was white blonde then went red and is now a very dark auburn, so it might go red but it also might not stay red!

NewFoneWhoDis · 03/07/2019 12:19

Yes. DS was born with dark hair, then went bald, the hair that grew in was fine blond and gradually went darker. At 4 he was kind of strawberry blonde. He's 7 now and auburn and will either stay that colour (same as his aunt and gran) or go dark auburn /reddish brown.

yiskasha · 03/07/2019 12:41

I was born with blonde hair and it turned red when I was a few months old. I hope when I have a baby they have red hair 😍 my dad had red hair when he was younger but he's very dark haired now.
