Cot bumpers- yes or no?

Hey Mumsnet, are cot bumpers a good or bad idea? Thanks!!

@Cookit - It's not a crime to ask a question, especially as this is an advice forum. Saying unpleasant things like that puts people off asking for help when they need it. You should think about that next time you want to be so negative.
I suspected the cot bumpers were not safe but because they are sold in lots of shops they must have passed safety guidelines and people must be buying them - otherwise shops wouldn't stock them, would they? Hence I thought it a good idea to reach out for advice - which I will certainly take! Thanks to those of you for your helpful responses xx

All bot bumpers, including mesh and individual ones pose either a suffocation or strangulation risk.

They are sold because people buy them. People buy them because they don't understand the risk. Or feel the risk of suffocation/ strangulation is small and the risk of a trapped arm is higher (personally I'd prefer a broken arm to a strangled baby).

In terms of safety testing, they only need to go through the same safety testing as other bedding and clothes, which is fire safety testing, not to see if they pose other risks.
