Just how many vitamins/minerals will I be missing out on if I can only manage 1 portion of fruit/veg per day?

Don't give me a kicking please. I'm trying really hard with this. I have a serious eating disorder related to being starved as a child. I'm in therapy & we're having to start from ground zero with my eating issues. I currently manage about one portion of fruit/veg a day but I aspire to being much, much better. I seem to get by ok apart from tiredness. Am I really missing out that much?

I don’t eat any fruit except for bananas which have to be cooked or blended with milk as I can’t eat them in their natural state or my throat itches. All other fruit makes my throat itch but can be tolerated a little if cooked.

I take a daily multi vitamin and other supplements.

It's not just vitamins and minerals. You'll be missing out on fibre too.

Don't focus on the negatives, focus on the vitamins and minerals you are getting from that one portion and build it up from there.

What fruit and veg are you currently managing? Is there anything you really want to be able to eat?

If you are in therapy to deal with this, is this thread going to help? Or is it feeding into guilt, stress, anxiety and so on?

Happy to talk about it if not. I just don't know if it's helpful.

Hey OP, first of all well done for facing your struggles and acknowledging that you need help.
You say you're lacking energy, and I promise that once you're able to incorporate more veggies into your diet, you'll feel the difference.
Maybe take it one week, and introduce one veg into your diet every week? Don't stress out about it, and take it one step at a time. Good luck!

My 13 yr old has never eaten vegetables. Her fruit intake is about 4 raspberries a day. She likes raw oats, so gets a bit of fibre from them. I have no idea how much of a negative effect this has had on her over time.
I give her a multi vit, extra magnesium, vit C, a powerful probiotic and fish oils every day. It’s expensive but I hope it’s doing some good.

I'd take a decent multivitamin/mineral supplement as a bit of a back up. If you are worried about deficiencies you would really need testing to identify what and it sounds like you are doing really well in dealing with your issues so probably don't want more appointments with "advice" at the moment. Take care x

I am not super good at eating veg and assume that no matter how well I'm trying to eat I will miss some. So I take a multivitamin every other day and on the alternate days vit. D (ordered by dr after blood test, has cleared my constant exhaustion) vit C and sometimes an iron tablet.

You sound like you're doing really well facing this. Good luck.

Soola, do you have OAS? My little girl has it :( I had no idea it was existed until she was diagnosed

You're doing so well facing up to this, OP, keep on going

Spam88 · 03/07/2019 07:32

You're getting a lot more than if you weren't eating any fruit and veg at all, so well done OP. I won't claim to have any nutrition knowledge, but I assume it would be advisable to be taking some supplements - have you had medical advice about that?
