Anyone relocated abroad (long haul) with pets?

DH has always wanted to live abroad since we met. He was working abroad when we did meet but then came home. I’ve always been adamant that this is something I don’t want to do, but recently I think I might be warming to the idea
I’ve said we can think about it in a few years.
One of the major put offs for me is our cats. I hate The thought of either leaving them here or putting them through long haul travel. I love them to bits.
Has anyone relocated and taken a pet? Is the process as traumatic for them as I imagine?

How old are they? Where would you relocate to? Would you want to return with them or is it a one off move? What’s the climate like where you’d move to?

They are 3 now
Strictly house cats
Not sure as yet but he worked in Malaysia last time , also not sure of when or if we’d return
It’s all just theoretical right now. But it would be long haul and not Europe
It really would be a decider for me, him too actually as he loves them as much as I do.

I don't have any personal experience of this, but my friend went to the US with her two dogs (for her DH's work), came back to UK with said dogs and then moved back to US with them. I seem to remember the dogs had to spend a period of time in quarantine, but weren't at all traumatised by the experience.

Well house cats wouldn’t notice a climate issue.

Depending on where you go it’s expensive and there can be lots of pre travel vet checks for blood samples and treatments. But if you’re ok with that and think they’d cope with that then I probably would while they were young.

If I was only going for a year or 2 though I’d probably try and get them fostered while I was away.
