Opening a bank account...

..is there a bank account you can open online? Ds has had a child account since he was 10- but he’s discovered that to turn it into a Current Account he he has to go into a physical branch- and the nearest one is 20 miles away and he’s working full time. He wants online and a debit card and somewhere for his wages to go.

First Direct. Think you have to be 18 though, so will depend on how old he is.

RezCowgirl · 01/07/2019 16:46

I opened a Natwest account online. Had to go into a branch to close it though Hmm

Monzo is a good one. All done online through an app and you get sent card soon. Works very well

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2019 17:10

Thank you. He mentioned Monzo- but I thought it was just like an Osper card. Is it a proper bank?

Can’t believe the Co-op is being so pathetic- they’ve definitely lost him as a customer......

Yes, Monzo all proper just like a normal bank, so can do DD's, transfers etc. Can also set up separate savings pots and things really easily.

DragonMamma · 01/07/2019 18:33

I agree with Monzo. It was so easy.

squidge9 · 01/07/2019 19:01

Another vote for Monzo (or Starling, I have both)

dementedpixie · 01/07/2019 19:06

What age is he? Think monzo is for over 18s

dementedpixie · 01/07/2019 19:06

Santander does it online too

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2019 19:12

Thank you. He’s just opened a Monzo account. So easy, after the ridiculous hassle from Co-op

How do they check your ID if you open an account online?

Nottobesoldseparately · 01/07/2019 19:21

I have a monzo account and I'm considering turning it into my current account.

I provided a copy of my drivers licence and did a video to prove who I was. Card came the next day.

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2019 19:31

I’m beginning to sound like a positive fossil- but how do you pay things in to a completely online bank account? Ds gets paid in cash for some gigs, and once got a cheque! And mil still does cheques for birthdays....

you can deposit cash at the post office. I think you have to send cheques by mail if I recall correctly.

monzo and starling are great. they are proper banks, but with instant notifications, no fees, 24h chat support, everything done on the app, etc. startling also has free business accounts, and it is owned and run by a woman if that sort of thing matters to you.

luckygreeneyes · 01/07/2019 20:47

Totally recommend starling, super easy to set up and I’m really happy with it

chipsandgin · 01/07/2019 20:48

Another vote for Monzo here - love the the instant notifications!

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2019 21:54

He set up his account this afternoon- and it’s already working! No card, obviously- but he has already been paid by a client and I paid him something I owed him. It’s amazing. I feel old!

First Direct here. No hassle, great service.

squidge9 · 02/07/2019 20:00

If he gets paid in cash I would go Starling over Monzo. Paying in cash to Monzo is via PayPoint and there is a small fee (also can take a couple of hours to deposit). With Starling is free, at post offices and it's credited to the account before you even take your card out of the machine.

I think both require cheques to be posted.

Kpo58 · 02/07/2019 20:04

I wouldn't go for Monzo. We couldn't pay some money into someone's Monzo account at work at it doesn't accept BACS or CHAPs payments.

ASilhouetteAndNothingMore · 02/07/2019 20:07

I'm with Halifax and you can scan cheques via the app. I've haven't tried it yet, still waiting to get a cheque to pay in Grin

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 02/07/2019 20:08

Monzo accepts BACS, don't know about CHAPS though.

squidge9 · 02/07/2019 20:26

Monzo accepts bacs and chaps but I think there's a £10k limit on chaps maybe. Not something I need to worry about as I never have and never will have that much at once
