Edwards and Pataus tests

Hi Guys,

Had my 12 week scan on Thursday and have detected a NT of 2.2 but with a crown rump length of 46.7. Along with blood tests they have come back with a 1/137 of Edwards and Patau syndrome. We were taken into a room and told we are being referred to St George’s and midwife then started talking about termination. I’m so worried and unsure what all this means. Appointment is tomorrow but I know we will still have to wait for CVS results.

I'm sorry you are going through this op Flowers
Its not good that nothing was explained to you on Thursday, they just told you and left you to worry. That must be so so hard for you. I hope you have support in real life?
Please take somebody with you tomorrow and write down any questions you want to ask so you don't forget when you get there.
I hope you get some answers tomorrow, 🌷

That is a 'high risk' result so a diagnostic test is recommended. However reverse the odds.... 136/137 chance your baby is fine. I hope you are okay.

1/137 means on two bus loads of people one 'might' have an issue. Try to relax until U know more

A couple of years ago I found out that my baby had Edwards Syndrome after the 12 week scan. I know how emotionally confused and exhausted you must be feeling right now. I’m so sorry you’re having to go through this, it’s truly awful.

I found that all the staff I met were really sympathetic and understanding, which made the whole process much easier. I had a CVS, which was uncomfortable but not painful and got the results back a week later ( it would have been sooner but it was when all the NHS computer systems crashed). I think the wait was the worst bit.

It was really clear though from the scans that our baby wasn’t going to make it and after getting confirmation it was Edward’s, we decided to terminate the pregnancy. That was the right choice for us. But some people do choose to continue the pregnancy and are supported by the hospital to do that.

I was well looked after by the hospital staff and saw the bereavement midwife a few times afterwards which really helped me process the whole experience.

I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow. Try and ask all the questions you need to help you make your decision and ask for clarification if you’re Not sure, they won’t mind. Fingers crossed your baby is one of the 136 with the normal number of chromosomes.

Sorry you're facing this OP.

You're odds are considered high but there's something like a 0.7% chance of a diagnosis. In reality it's very small.

If the blood results don't come back favourable, you still don't have to make any decisions. You can wait until the 20 week scan if you want and see if there's any congenital issues. Or you can choose togo ahead with the pregnancy. Don't be forced into a decision you aren't ready to make

Thank you all for your comments. It’s just so worrying and I know I won’t sleep tonight. I appreciate you all taking the time out to respond. I have written out my list of questions and will be making sure I get full clarity this time.
Xx

Hi Unfortunately when we went up to London, baby had lost it’s battle and had no heartbeat. I had to have a surgical termination and currently at home recovering.

Thank you for everyone’s love and advice xx
