Summer holiday ideas in North East to entertain 7yo - very little budget.

twirlypoo · 30/06/2019 14:12

I have 10 weeks to fill, I’m a single parent and my max budget each week for entertainment (including food and petrol out of it) is about £100 ish. We are in in the North East and for various reasons it’s been a horrendous year and I just want a bloody lovely summer.

I so far have these ideas:

Durham botanical gardens
Camping near Bamburgh for 2 nights
Goto holy island
Walking tour of Newcastle city centre from an app I’ve found
Gibside / cragside / national trust stuff
Stand comedy club for kids show
Beamish
Durham maybe?

Help me out?! What else can I do and where else can I go?!

Some "free" ideas that I don't think have been mentioned

Hawthorne Dene (just past seaham, drive to Hawthorne village and follow long road down to dene, free parking on road) beautiful woods to walk through and if you walk all the way you come to the coast and can cross the railway line down to a secluded beach. One of our favourite places.
Herrington country park in sunderland. Free parking brill play area and lovely walks. Over the road is penshaw monument, climb to the top for fabulous views.
Barnes park in sunderland is another nice park with good play areas, tennis courts and pond to feed the ducks. Again free parking.
Roker / seaburn beaches, roker park is nice for a wander..there's a little miniature railway that operates for a small donation of your choice. Take buckets and fishing nets as the boating lake is great for catching little tiddler fish. Plenty of free parking around the park in the side streets.
Shildon railway museum is free, sister to the york one. Not as large but still worth a visit. Some times runs steam train rides for a couple of pounds. Theres also a little play area.
Wynyard county park is fabulous, free parking and amazing adventure play ground split into three areas. Lovely walk along the old railway and woodland for den building.

Low cost ideas ....
Preston park museum and grounds. Free parking, skate park and brilliant play area. Entry into the museum is £5 for a family ticket that lasts a year. It's like a miniature version of beamish. Will be various low cost activities throughout the year.

Hardwick hall county park has a lovely play area and adventure walk with free gruffalo trail. Parking is £3 all day.

Kirkley hall zoological gardens is a small zoo type farm with a free wallaby walk through and exotic animals. Small play area and also you can explore the gardens. Theres a vouchers all over the internet at the minute for family ticket costing £10.

The north east is fabulous ... so much to do i love living here! You can have a lovely summer for the cost of a picnic / couple of quid for parking. We really do have the best of it all - vibrant cities, beautiful coast line and gorgeous country side

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/06/2019 18:52

If you can still get the bus to Washington Wildfowl Park that a lovely day out, check the prices though (we have access to a pass so I don't know the price).

Big park in Chester le Street

Durham and Worton Park ( big revamp a few years ago).

Discovery Museum and Great North Museum (free) in Newcastle.

Oh and I can't believe I forgot to add this one - the open air swimming pool at Stanhope is brilliant. Especially on a sunny day - like being abroad. It's huge and heated it's really warm. It's only a couple of pound for two hour swim. Then down onto the river behind on the stepping stones for fishing and plodging. You drive through wo lsingham on the way ... Again lovely adventure play area, huge playing fields and a river walk. That's another favourite day out for us and feels like a real treat.

Try real family holidays, which have nature activity centres round the UK. They charge £30 per person per night for accommodation, all meals plus snacks & one activity. I've been before & can highly recommend. Extra activities can be booked for an additional cost.

Most museums are free so you just need to take a packed lunch with you.

TattiePants · 30/06/2019 19:19

@MichonnesBBF Kynren is amazing. We saw it the first year it was running and again 2 weeks ago. I could happily watch it again!

Peacon · 30/06/2019 19:23

Go on to South Tyneside Council web page. In August there is free children’s entertainment called kids fest

MichonnesBBF · 30/06/2019 19:35

@TattiePants, it really is, So pleased there is somebody else out there who has seen it, I have thought about starting a thread about it to see if anybody else had been as it really is a must watch.

You were very lucky to get tickets for the dress rehearsal/press release night, very jealous.

twirlypoo · 30/06/2019 19:54

I am so overwhelmed by this thread. You have honestly made me feel so excited about the summer when I was previously dreading it.

Thank you all SO much, and I’m so glad that other people are finding it useful too.

I was actually looking at kynren tickets this morning - friends have been and sang its praises. Do you think the standard seating is okay or is it worth the money upgrading?

As my own contribution (though you guys have covered anything I had plus a million times more!) there is also the outside swimming pool at Haltwhistle I was going to have a look at.

this looks brilliant at the discovery museum this sat - building a cardboard city!

And my last find - the new Everyman cinema in town is my new favourite place ever. They have board games in the bar before you go into the cinema, and the bring you your food and drinks to the screening which you watch from a sofa. The staff there are amazing and it’s incredibly family friendly (though not a budget option!)

LenoVentura · 30/06/2019 20:00

Kynren is good but be aware that it gets pretty cold as the evening wears on, so wrap up - there's no shelter of any sort if it rains. Also, there's literally nothing else there and there's a lot of hanging about before the performance so don't go too early and take your own picnic.

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/06/2019 20:01

Might be worth joining EH, lots of places to visit in the NE and some great events.

Favourites include Warkworth, Chesters, Corbridge, Richmond, Middleham ( near Forbidden Corner), Birdoswald, Belsay Hall ( not far from Kirkley Hall - explore the garden and walk not just the animals), Carlisle Castle (good park nearby). Have a great summer.

PotteringAlong · 30/06/2019 20:07

If you want budget cinema, the vue cinema in Gateshead (park at big tesco!) does family films every day at 10am in the holidays, £2.95 per person!

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/06/2019 20:10

Shildon has an excellent train museum, still prefer a train trip to the one at York but that makes a pricey day out.

MichonnesBBF · 30/06/2019 20:17

@LenoVentura and Op

Yes it can get cold you are allowed to take blankets and cushions, layer up if needed,

Taking your own food or drink is now not allowed neither is backpacks (clear bags only) This was on the back of the Manchester terrorist attacks.

Kynren is well publicised as an outdoor event so yes you do have to dress accordingly.

There is now a new Vikings village to see and a walk around to see some of the animals taking part and various food and drink outlets to visit.

Personally I would aim arrive 90 minutes before the show starts.

Thanks @Bearfrills for the Groupon Seven Stories link! Will be taking DS in July!

stmartins60 · 30/06/2019 20:34

Druridge Bay Country Park near Amble is lovely and lots of activities on offer there .

MichonnesBBF · 30/06/2019 20:39

@twirlypoo, sorry I didn't answer your question about seating.

There is no limited viewing at Kynren you can see the whole event wherever you sit, cheaper seats are just as good, honestly there is that much going on it's like your at a tennis match with all the looking left and right, straight ahead up and down Grin.

Hope you manage to go

Grandadwasthatyou · 30/06/2019 20:51

These suggestions bring back so many memories from when my dc were little.

We spent many a day at Ridley Park in Blyth, dc playing in the water feature and then getting back in the car for a short drive to the beach to play in the sand, followed by fish and chips and ice cream for afters if you still had room.

Also Shiremoor wooden park, as the dc used to call it. Agree with poster who said it looked a bit run down but the dc would spend hours climbing and playing in the fort and using the little bikes which were dotted around, followed by a cheap hot dog.

Wallsend Park is worth at least a couple of hours if the weather is nice. Nothing fancy at the cafe but enough to satisfy little appetites, ice creams etc.

Saltwell Park in Gateshead. We used to start off at the play park for "little"people , then when they got bored with that move on to the larger play equipment. Then visited the rabbits and peacocks ( and talking minor bird) in the small pets area. Picnic in the rose garden where the dc could run around and watch the squirrels and then into the maze. The parents can stand above and watch the children having fun getting lost. It's great because when they have had enough of one area there are plenty of other areas to move on to.

So many hot summer days spent strawberry picking at Brockbushes near Corbridge. Nothing better than strawberry jam made with strawberries you've picked yourself.

And finally Exhibition Park , Newcastle, which I don't think anybody has mentioned. A large play area with a lovely coffee shop, adults enjoying a latte sitting under the parasols, knowing the children are safe and in sight.

Honestly I could go on and on. Wish my dc were still little. Happy happy memories.

Bearfrills · 30/06/2019 20:52
