Summer holiday ideas in North East to entertain 7yo - very little budget.

twirlypoo · 30/06/2019 14:12

I have 10 weeks to fill, I’m a single parent and my max budget each week for entertainment (including food and petrol out of it) is about £100 ish. We are in in the North East and for various reasons it’s been a horrendous year and I just want a bloody lovely summer.

I so far have these ideas:

Durham botanical gardens
Camping near Bamburgh for 2 nights
Goto holy island
Walking tour of Newcastle city centre from an app I’ve found
Gibside / cragside / national trust stuff
Stand comedy club for kids show
Beamish
Durham maybe?

Help me out?! What else can I do and where else can I go?!

Sprog on the Tyne blog always posts a guide to a frugal summer in the north east. Have a look at previous years posts, and I'm sure this year's will be posted soon. There's also a Facebook page.

Buy a science experiment book and work your way through it. My kids love doing experiments!

twirlypoo · 30/06/2019 14:33

Ooh I will have a look at that blog, thank you - I’ve just been on the north east family fun page so they will both keep me busy!

Love the science book idea too - are there any you particularly recommend? We are watching the junior bake off at the moment so think will add a baking challenge into the week as well.

Thank you both Flowers

Day trip to South Shields. Get the ferry from North Shields, it takes around five minutes to cross and only costs a couple of quid but kids love it. My DC reacted like they were on a Disneyland cruise 😂 When you get to South Shields, cross straight over the road and there's a big building on your right called The Word. They have free activities and exhibitions on all summer. Walk down into the town and there is a free museum, think it's called South Shields Museum, about the history of the area with various things to look at. Head towards the beach and there is an amazing park on Bents Road with play areas, a sandpit, a duck pond, a huge playing field, ice cream shop/cafe, and a miniature railway. There is a funfair and arcades across the road which can be quite pricey but if you check their FB page before you go they often have offers on like £25 worth of ride tickets for £15. For reference, £25 worth of tickets gets my three older DC around 4-6 rides each depending on which ones they want to go on (the little kid rides are fewer tickets per go than the bigger rides).

Discovery Museum and Great North Museum, both have summer programmes on their websites of free and cheap activities plus the museums themselves are free.

If you can travel then Ridley Park in Blyth has a free splash pad with water fountains. Between the water, the play areas, and the lawn games outside the safe we easily spend an entire day here. Take a picnic for lunch and all it will cost you is the price of an ice cream.

Just along from Ridley Park is Blyth Beach. They have beach huts you can hire for £16 a day, there is an ice cream parlour, chip shop, park, and a WW2 battery as well as a lovely beach to play on.

Tynemouth Park is good for a day out too. For £10 you get a game of mini golf, a go around the maze, and all day access to the inflatables (slides, bouncy castles, climbing walls). There is a duck pond with boats and a play area too, plus the beach across the road.

The big movie screen is going to be on at old Eldon Square/hippy green showing films in the open air for free. My DC love sitting with a bag of sweets on a deckchair watching cartoons.

Buy a cheap paddling pool or sandpit for the garden if you can, free entertainment at home then too.

Morpeth park is lovely, it has a paddling pool and nice play area as well as walks along the river where there are ducks, canoes to watch, bridges for pooh sticks, etc. Plessey Woods also.

Look up train tickets, last summer I got all six of us to York for the day for £35 return. There is loads to do in York for free, it's only an hour away from Newcastle, and the kids think they're on an adventure.

Whitley Bay has a small but nice park with sand and a water play area, there are some arcades around the corner with 2p machines and tickets to collect for little prizes, and a nice walk along The Links or a play on the sand.

I don't know if it's still on but Groupon had an offer with half price annual membership to Seven Stories. They also often have offers for half price bowling, half price softplay, and half price climbing.

Bearfrills · 30/06/2019 14:37

Also look up Tyneside Rocks and Northumberland Rocks on FB. Last summer my four were mad about painting rocks and then hiding then for other people to find as well as going out rock hunting. It was a good way of filling in two consecutive days - one day to paint them and then a day out to a park or beach to hide them and look for rocks by other people.

twirlypoo · 30/06/2019 14:40

Bearfrills I bloody love you. I’m writing up lists now!

Thank you so much!

(Also, Ds has ALWAYS pined to go on South Shields ferry after a friend told him about how amazing it was..... I’d forgot about it till now!)

I hate boats and made the mistake of taking them on the upper deck, spent the crossing clinging to my seat and hissing at them to "just sit down" but they loved it, high giving the staff and all sorts when they got off Grin

Bearfrills · 30/06/2019 14:42

*high fiving

TattiePants · 30/06/2019 14:45

Do you get Raring2go magazine through your DC's school bag? DD brought a copy home on Friday and there is an article on free / cheap days out across the North East. There are lots of events on their website too.

For Beamish, are you bussing or driving? If you're bussing then keep your ticket because you can get a discount on the door with it, or you used to be able to anyway, and you can use your entry ticket again for a whole year. We had tickets last year and went a good eight or nine times so it was well worth the entry fee.

The Castle Keep was done out last year too, that's nice for a day out now.

Is he into gaming at all? There's a place in The Gate called The CTRL Pad, it's at the back opposite Nandos. They have loads of games consoles and games, it's £5 an hour and a drink is £2.50 but you get three refills of it so really it's four drinks for £2.50.

Active Northumberland run a summer activities programme of free and low cost events.

Manor Walks shopping centre in Cramlington have free activities on all summer. Last year they had arts and crafts, a mobile planetarium show, mini golf, visits from superheroes, and so on. There's something on every day of the holidays. There is a Vue cinema there too which has Mini Mornings showings of kids films for £2.95 a ticket, they're normally slightly older films but their tickets for new films are only £4.99 if you buy online. I take mine to Wilko beforehand for a £1 pot of Pick-a-Mix.

Bearfrills · 30/06/2019 14:53

Sunderland! Metro through to Sunderland, we don't often get the Metro so that's an adventure in itself. There is a museum and winter gardens which are free entry and behind the museum is a good park.

Bede's World/Jarrow Hall in Jarrow is cheap entry too, has activities (Vikings!) and farm animals and a good park behind it.

pussinwellyboots · 30/06/2019 15:04

Don't forget the library summer reading challenge, am pretty sure it's national and you could probably structure a day a week around going to the library, returning and choosing books. They sometimes also run crafts and other activities and you could find some baking and science books!

IggyAce · 30/06/2019 15:05

In August there is going to be an Elmer tour, large Elmer statues decorated by artists placed all over Newcastle. So you may want to combine that with your walking tour. The discovery museum is good and it’s free.
Kirkleathem museum near Redcar is free and it has a good play area. You could then go into Redcar or Saltburn, would recommend Saltburn as they have beach and pier and the valley gardens and only one small amusement arcade.
York is always a good day out, National railway museum and then a walk along the city walls and the shambles. We always park and ride and kids goes free.

birdsdestiny · 30/06/2019 15:05

High force waterfall.
If you are a National Trust member there are lots of options with Belsay Gibside Cheryburn etc.
Hamsterley forest . Hall hill farm (often has offers about now that you can use in the holidays) Roker beach, saltwell park, jesmond dene , lickety split ice cream parlour in durham. Broom house farm. Ouseburn farm (cheap) . In villages in county durham there are free events in village parks, some sport, some nature based, I think they are run by Oases or some such name!
7 is quite a good age for bargain activities. I am bracing myself for activities for 14 and 10 year old!

Bearfrills · 30/06/2019 15:06

And one last one, Shiremoor Adventure Playground. It's run by the council so it's free and it looks really shabby and run down, a bit like you might catch tetanus, but don't be put off. It's really actually safe and is amazing. It's a huge wooden play frame with rope swings, hammocks, climbing walls, towers to jump off, nets to climb and tyres to crawl through. There are playhouses and dens. A football pitch. A sandpit. An activity room with arts and crafts. And then on top of that there are roller skates, scooters, and skateboards that the kids can help themselves to while their parents stand there going "but you don't know how to rollerskate..." and waiting for the inevitable fall. There are wheelbarrows. There are animals including two very tame pet pigs. It's all fenced in so you can turn the kids loose to go off and explore, they come back mucky and hungry which is good because the cafe is stupidly cheap - 50p for a hotdog, 20p for a cup of tea, £1 for a toastie.

TattiePants · 30/06/2019 15:06

@twirlypoo I'd second all of @Bearfrills ideas but I'd also suggest:

National Glass Centre is celebrating it's 21st birthday this year and they have loads of events on over the summer and most activities are £3ish but access to the centre, glass blowing demos and walking on the glass roof is free. If the tide is out you can look for old glass on the river banks.

Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens are free and there are usually craft activities during the holidays.

Marine Activity Centre and Seaham Harbour Activity Centre run paddle boarding and kayaking taster sessions for £8ish. Seaham also has some lovely beaches to explore.

This year's Summer Reading challenge is 'Space Chase' if you can get to a library. The Word, South Shields mentioned previously has just changed its exhibit to space to tie in (all free).

Every Wednesday in Sunderland there is a sports day at a local park which costs £2-3ish and you can try lots of different activities. The Sunderland Airshow (late July) is also worth a visit and completely free.

Souter Lighthouse and Washington Old Hall (both NT) have free or cheap activities most days. Our favourite off all the local NT places is Wallington Hall; it has a fab tree at the front of the house that my kids spend hours climbing. I'm sure one of the Roman Forts on Hadrian's Wall is also NT.

Arbeia Roman Fort and Segedunum Fort are both free (I think). If you look on Tyne & Wear Museum's website you'll see a full list of the museums that are free.

Explore Northumberlandia - google it if you haven't seen it.

Bagadverts · 30/06/2019 15:11

Seven stories might be fun depending on the age of your children.

LateToTheParty · 30/06/2019 15:22
  • Durham Oriental Museum - it's less than a mile from the Botanic Gardens on your list, and adults are £1.50, children over 5 are 75p.
  • Collecting sea glass along the coast at Seaham. There are several free car parks with good access to the beach. It's easy to find lots of small bits of white and green sea glass, worn smooth by the rocks and waves.

Thought foundation in birtley. You can get the 21 bus from Gateshead / Newcastle / Durham and it stops outside.

www.thoughtfoundation.co.uk/

Chester-le-Street riverside park
Saltwell Park in low fell

The metro centre has a kids club that’s free to join and you get lots of money off activities (and some free playmobil!). They also have lots of activities on in the metro centre that are often free

intu.co.uk/metrocentre/events

In the centre of Newcastle they put lots of deckchairs out and show free films! Normally a morning, afternoon and eve one. The morning ones are always kids films.

In Newcastle the discovery museum and the Hancock are free. Dippy the dinosaur is on tour from the National history museum at the hancock at the minute.

Depending on where you are, I know a previous poster said about the splash pad in Blyth Park but there’s on in Chester-le-Street Park too depending on which one you’re closer to!

Rock pooling at St Mary's lighthouse - but check the tides first

TattiePants · 30/06/2019 15:37

@potteringalong we were thinking about Chester-le-Street splash pad today but then the clouds came over and the kids changed their minds!

PotteringAlong · 30/06/2019 15:52

@TattiePants love a bit of splash park action!
