Staying in Liverpool this Wed for one or 2 nights with dh, he wants to do the beatles stuff and the docks

Small budget but really don't want a shitheap have had enough of them in the past. First trip away without kids.
Have looked at village hotel, we like the pool there. We'll be driving down from Scotland, is the village hotel handy for getting into the docks?

There's a lot of free things you can do in town too, museums/art galleries.

There is a fb page called independent Liverpool which shares loads of amazing places to eat which aren't chain companies. We've gone to some great places as a result of that page.

I'm actually from the Wirral, you can see the liver building from my house, and I have to say the view of the waterfront from our side (as in looking towards Liverpool) is amazing. If the weather is nice I would suggest getting the ferry over, but check out whether it's the tour or normal journey.

The tour goes on for about an hour and was a bit boring, so if you've got bad weather it's not a good idea, you'd be better getting the commute ferry and just going over and back. I got it as a mistake not realising.

Gibbo's Cheap Scouse (4-6 bowls).

Around 500g of stewing beef or lamb. (If you can only get a 400g pack then just put a little more of each vegetable in)
3 good sized carrots
Half a swede
2 medium onions
5 good sized spuds
All veg chopped as you see fit - remember spuds will dissolve slightly so cut accordingly.
2 Oxo/stock cubes in either B or L, depending on what you used
Small amount of gravy granules in B or L again
Bay leaf
Small amount of plain flour
Salt & pepper
Worcester sauce, if liked
Cold water

Trim fat off meat, add a little S&P and toss in little bit of flour. Add to medium heat pan and add a splash or two of water. Whilst meat is browning, this will turn flour into a paste - keep moving meat around and add a splash more water if needed. When you see a paste forming, add about 1/4 mug of water and crumble a stock cube in. Make sure you crumble it well. Keep stirring and you should see a glossy brown paste start to form. Now add around 2/3 pint of stock, made with other cube. Bung all the veg bar spuds in and stick the bay leaf in. Splash of w sauce if wanted. Bring to gentle simmer and put lid on pot. Check & stir periodically. Skim any fat off. After 1 hour, add the spuds and 2 tsp gravy granules. Keep simmering until meat is tender. If scouse is too thin, add a tablespoon of gravy granules (use minimal water). Add more if needed/wanted - it can be any consistency you want.

You'll know when it's done - as long as meat is tender and spuds are cooked through, it's ready.

Serve in bowl with bread & butter. Crusty is nice to have but value sliced white is perfectly adequate. Some people like black/white pepper or a dollop of HP on theirs. Bowl up any leftovers and keep in fridge. Most people agree that Scouse is better when it's a day old.

If you are short on cash, this is a decent meal to make if you don't mind having the same thing two days running. Mam always made it two days before payday!

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 01/07/2019 21:38

Op try Staycity aparthotel

Toddlerteaplease · 01/07/2019 21:41

My favourite place to eat is Moose coffee on Hope street of Dale street.

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 01/07/2019 21:44

I second moose coffee for breakfast

Runningintothesunset · 01/07/2019 21:54

There’s the most amazing (and cheap) Greek restaurant www.greekosophy.co.uk/ which almost always has a groupon offer on. Such good food!

Runningintothesunset · 01/07/2019 21:55

The cathedrals are worth a mooch round and are free too

Toddlerteaplease · 01/07/2019 22:18

@Wolfcubisthefemalenominal the American pancakes, drool! Wish you could pre book though!

Go up the Liver buildings tour. Its boss. And great views. rlb360.com/

Also you can do a Mersey tunnel tour also boss. www.merseytravel.gov.uk/tunnels/Pages/Tunnel-Tours.aspx

Go to the library. Central library. It's a great building its on William Brown Street. Also worth a look is St George's Hall which is close by.

Head over to the Baltic Market or the New Duke St Market for amazing food. Its a food Hall. Also the area around the Baltic is very good. Loads of independent bars and ghetto golf which is fun. Check out independent-liverpool.co.uk/ for w good look at our independent scence.

Jamaica Street is good for street art and local graffiti. This is where the Liver wings are and also the Klopp murial. Definitely worth a visit. Across the road from Baltic.

Head up to the Georgian Quarter for a wander round. Lovely.

Bold St is also good. Kind of bohemian and also independent shops and restaurants.

The docks are worth a visit although good there isn't really my scene as its mostly chains. Brasco lounge is nice.

Ferry Cross the Mersey have themed nights on with live bands. It's supposed to be good.

Trattoria 51 on old hall st is good for Italian food and also there's one top of Bold St. Italian club I think it's called.

Moose coffee is a must for breakfast/brunch. There are 2 in the city centre. Hope St and also Dale St. Definitely worth the wait. Leaf on bold St is OK. Mowgli is fit if you like Indian. Bakchich is also good if you like Lebanese food.

Enjoy our city.

If you get off the ferry at woodside you could have a nice lunch at the ferry terminal. They have just done it up and opened a selection of mini restaurants (inc one that does scouse!) There is a great ice cream parlour in there too

Have a fab time

tararabumdeay · 01/07/2019 23:20

I once had the best cheese roll at St Albans Cathedral. On the strength of that recommended lunch at Rochester Cathedral with a friend; we were not disappointed.

So, looked up the menu at both. Wow! Scouse - will travel for scouse.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/07/2019 03:17

The metropolitan cathedral cafe sells scouse.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/07/2019 03:19

@GeneandFred I really enjoyed the Mersey tunnel tour. It was fascinating. I love Liverpool. My best friend was promoted and moved their a few years ago. So go up a lot. I would love to live there, but i didn't want to leave my current job.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/07/2019 12:48

Just done the liver building tour your. Interesting but very overpriced. They basically just take you up to the roof to look at the view. Other tall buildings are cheaper with just as good a view.

ssd · 04/07/2019 21:21

We ended up staying at the liner had a lovely time in Liverpool.
Thanks so much everyone for your help and the recipes Smile
