UTI - heavy bleeding ?

Had to go to OOH at 9ish with severe urinary symptoms . I usually self catheterise but have been finding it more difficult/painful to pass a catheter and in a lot of pain in general .

Peed at the hospital and it was more blood than urine - doctor said on that basis it’s likely a UTI and discharged with codeine and nitrofurantoin for 7 days . BP was high , pulse up, fever .

I got home at 10-30 ish and I’ve had to go about ten times , and wet myself once - each time with visible blood , clots , bloody discharge etc . Sat in the bath and almost as if I’m having a heavy period .

I’ve had UTIs before and never seen visible bleeding - this reminds me of when I had surgery to my urethra more .

I’m absolutely exhausted , I’ve had a horrible night in lots and lots of ways but I’m scared that I’ve done something with the catheters , that’s caused the bleeding . Surely it cant be normal with a UTI to have such heavy bleeding , or does blood always look worse in water ?

That doesn’t sound right. You might have an injury. A&E I’d say I’m afraid

A+E for you - it sounds like an injury. No UTI would make you bleed that much. Good luck.

I’ve spoken to 111, they’ve said naproxen and lie down for an hour , if no changes I’ve to phone back and they’ll see if can get transport to nearest A&E (30 miles away - £60 in a taxi) . I think I’ve injured myself too , I’ve never had a UTI with that much bleeding .

Keep an eye on your temp and pulse etc - if you start feeling very unwell, are shaking etc then get medical help quickly.

I’ve never had visible blood despite many UTIs but I know a friend of mine has. Is it stinging when you go? Why do you catheterise? Is there an underlying issue that should be considered?
