Who here knows about detonation? -Genoa's bridge

My curiosity is piqued by seeing all the little red bags of explosive pinned to the legs of the bridge. Is that really how they detonate these days? I would've expected something a bit more sophisticated. I guess they did it this way because the structure was unsafe already?

I think those are bags of water used to bring the dust from the explosion down as soon as possible. They also sprayed the bridge with water before it was detonated.
The Morandi bridge goes over a residential area of Genova and they evacuated 3,000+ people who are expected to return to their homes later tonight.
Sad that it had to happen but they seem on track with the rebuilding project.
I used to travel over that bridge at least once a month and never felt safe doing it. Too high, too old and too much traffic over that artery of the city.

Here’s a slide from an article in the local newspaper. It says “positioning of bags of water on explosive charges”.
