What do you make for a BBQ

Napqueen1234 · 28/06/2019 12:38

Just that really. Hosting a bbq for DD birthday (family only around 12 people. Thinking of doing:

Burgers with cheese/toppings etc
Chicken wings
Veg kebabs with Halloumi
Corn on cob
Sticky sausages (served cold- cooked before)
Crispy rosemary garlic potatoes
Coleslaw (shop bought)
Big green salad
Homemade waldorf salad

Birthday cake
Brownies
MIL making cheesecake

Pimms
Beer
Soft drinks

Anything I've missed? Sorry this seems so basic but we haven't long had our own house with a garden - old parties were just booze and bowls of crisps we haven't hosted a bbq or party in the day before!

Thanks :)

Onions!

Napqueen1234 · 28/06/2019 12:43

@bebumba fried onions for on the burgers? Good idea. I hate onions so I always forget things I wouldn't normally make for myself Grin

Good list you have there. I always do salmon fillets in foil cooked on the bbq grill. Goes down a treat

I am an onion lover so wouldn't contemplate a bbq without them 😀.
And yes, they need to be cooked.

Kisir and potato salad

IamPickleRick · 28/06/2019 12:47

Sorry, you’ve got potato’s. Missed that bit!

Orangesox · 28/06/2019 12:47

Sounds good to me, I might swap out the wings for some sort of marinaded chicken breast or boneless thighs as wings are quite messy and I personally am not a fan. Soft drinks wise, maybe a nice presse or two so there’s some adult friendly drinks for those not keen on Cola, Lemonade etc.

Plenty of paper napkins are a must, good quality disposable tablewear if you don’t have enough crockery, cutlery and glassware for all guests. Likewise ask some guests to bring along outdoor seating if you don’t have enough so that guests aren’t half lurking in the house and half in the garden.

Try to not stress out too much and make sure you enjoy the party yourself rather than running around like a headless chicken Smile

Napqueen1234 · 28/06/2019 12:48

ooh @anewdispensation that's an idea. Just wrapped in foil and bunged on the bbq for a bit? How long do they take to cook?

Pineapple kebabs!

Cut into chunks, thread onto a skewer, dust with dark brown sugar flavoured with a little cinnamon powder and stick on the barbecue to caramelise.

SinkGirl · 28/06/2019 12:51

Waitrose have amazing meats for the bbq - even if you don’t buy them the range could inspire you. Personally, their smoked dogs are the best thing ever so worth a trip just for those.

I like to do thin (and inexpensive) steak, marinaded and then cooked really quickly - or rib eyes if you want to spend more.

I also do chicken thighs over any other cuts

Look up a recipe for bbq rubs - add them to burgers, chicken, steak etc... makes everything taste 10x better. Usually consist of salt, sugar and various spices. I make up a jar for bbqs and then use it for any random bits of meat in the week when oven cooking. Awesome stuff :)

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/06/2019 12:53

Definitely swap the chicken wings, lots of nice marinated chicken recipes to buy or make that are easier to eat than chicken wings.

Napqueen1234 · 28/06/2019 13:00

Thanks for advice re: wings. Maybe will go for chicken kebabs instead :)

I make chicken tandoori kebabs. Chicken pieces marinated in indian spices and yoghurt overnight then threaded onto skewers and cooked on the bbq
I serve them in flat breads spread with yoghurt and some v hot chilli sauce with shredded red cabbage, grated carrot and onion and chopped cherry tomatoes and grated cucumber with a squeeze of lime juice. They are always the first thing to go even before the 🍔
Bbq corn on the cob
Think sizzle steaks brushed with bbq sauce
Burgers with haloumi on top

HellInAHandCartThatsWhat · 28/06/2019 13:06

bananas with chocolate buttons inside...or dark chocolate pieces....

thecapitalsunited · 28/06/2019 13:09

Chicken wings always go down well at my house. Yes they are messy but I do a lot of bbqs and everyone always asks if there will be wings.

My next bbq I’ll be doing wings, a chicken kebab recipe called Kellybab on our rotisserie and pulled pork. Tomato salad. Corn salad. Plus pittas, coleslaw and maybe mac and cheese.

Chicken drumsticks tend to go down well too. Whatever you do don’t put chicken breast on the bbq because it can be very tasteless compared to other cuts of meat. If you do kebabs do then with thigh meat.

userxx · 28/06/2019 13:09

Salmon on the BBQ is devine, it makes it so tasty.

Napqueen1234 · 28/06/2019 13:10

oooh @HellInAHandCartThatsWhat we used to do bananas with mars bars inside when I was a kid- SO GOOD

Smores?

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/06/2019 13:29

Pudding for adults. We put a whole banana including its skin in tin foil and cook on the BBQ until it's gone soft. Take it off, add your favourite liqueur and a splash of single cream.

Circe32 · 28/06/2019 13:40

Mojito lime chicken - Schwartz do a marinade that you make up with white rum, oil, lime & mint. Then either cook chicken breasts whole or cut up for kebabs.

Pipandmum · 28/06/2019 13:42

Where do you live? I’m coming over it sound so yummy!

WatcherOfTheNight · 28/06/2019 15:23

Belly Pork ? It's one of my favourite BBQd especially with halloumi kebabs

WhatsInAName19 · 28/06/2019 15:24

Sounds amazing. Can I come? 😁

Napqueen1234 · 28/06/2019 15:40

I’ll do a trial run and then of course @Pipandmum and @WhatsInAName19 you are welcome to the next one Grin

Yes marinated salmon fillets in spices and herbs wrapped in tin foil and cooked on hot barbie for about 5-8 mins. It’s delicious and your guests will love you!
