If I was collecting classic picture books, what one book would you say I DEFINITELY should buy?

I don't mean modern classics, but true old classics.

Thanks!

The Baby Catalogue - it’s so lovely!

DoraNora · 26/06/2019 19:55

I can't read! I'm so sorry, you said one ... So I'd reduce that list to:

Where the Wild Things Are

Sorry! Was too excited

CellularBlanket · 26/06/2019 19:58

I loved The Church Mice books
Peepo without a doubt and The Tiger who came to Tea
DoraNora's list is pretty good!!!

CellularBlanket · 26/06/2019 19:59

If one only - it would be Peepo

whoami24601 · 26/06/2019 22:02

Ooh some good ones! I'm thinking specifically of ones for toddlers that you can get as a board book.

Some of our favourites are-

Dear Zoo
We're going on a bear hunt
The Mog books
Elmer
The tiger who came to tea
The Large family books

BikeRunSki · 26/06/2019 22:15

Orange Pear Apple Bear
Monkey and Me
The Gruffalo
The Alfie books

then for pre-school age
The Paper Dolls
Dogger

ImportantWater · 26/06/2019 22:19

As well as many already mentioned (def Peepo, and Where the Wild Things Are, and Tiger who came to Tea) I would say The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

NannyR · 26/06/2019 22:27

Another vote for peepo - lovely illustrations, I love reading it and babies and toddlers love to listen to it. For books with more of a story I would go for the Mog books, the Alfie books, the tiger who came to tea.
Goodnight moon is another old favourite that a lot of kids I've looked after find quite soothing and relaxing at bedtime.

Very hungry caterpillar

whoami24601 · 26/06/2019 23:16

Looks like peepo is a winner so far! It's for a pregnant friend who used to be an English teacher and has a specialism in early reading. Thought it would be a nice baby gift to start a library for them. I'm fairly sure she has no kids books at the minute but does have most practical things because I dumped all my baby things on her
