Weekend break ideas

Hi All, I'm looking for some suggestions please for weekend break ideas for me and my new man Grin

We'll have 48Hrs together max Friday - Sunday so don't want to spend too long travelling.

Live in Hertfordshire and would prefer to drive rather than get a train and I suspect flying is out the question due to time constraints.

Still in the getting to know each other stages so somewhere romantic would be nice, but at the same time we both enjoy a drink and nice food so somewhere with a bit going on would be my preference.

My initial thoughts are London, Cambridge or Brighton but other than that I'm at a loss!

Please can anyone help with suggestions of where else would make a good weekend break in these circumstances? Nice hotels/restaurant suggestions and things to do during the one full day would be a great help.

I've never really done the whole weekend away thing so need as much help as I can get!

Budget not really an issue, although it's not unlimited.

Thanks Smile

What a nice problem to have!
Brighton isn't very nice at night. Lots of Stag and Hen and definitely not romantic. Not somewhere I'd want to wander about.
Richmond is lovely and you could go in to London for the day.
Cotswolds? Some very fancy hotels and lovely villages to mooch about in?

Cambridge or Oxford would be nice. You can just much around the city centres and look at whatever takes your fancy. Plenty of choices for drinks/food in the evenings.

If you like seaside then parts of North Norfolk would be reachable e.g Hunstanton.

Whitstable might suit!

Richmond is a great idea. Petersham nurseries for a special lunch, the park for a long walk or bike ride, a boat trip, maybe visit kew or hampton court...

See this is what I love about Mumsnet! Suggestions I wouldn't have even thought of! Thanks for your responses.

I've discounted Brighton but now I'm in a quandary as to whether we go coastal or not Confused

I've come to the conclusion that Cambridge, whilst lovely, isn't a million miles away and I go occasionally to shop so I don't think it will have the special factor for our first weekend away.

I've had a quick google and the Cotswolds and Richmond both sound lovely, and I can really picture spending time there.

Will do a bit more research on hotels in the area before deciding, I just want it to be perfect! Grin

Stroll along the river and have a drink/meal outside.
