If you’re in your late forties do you ever wake up and not feel like shit?

Seems like every morning I get out of bed feeling stiff and sore and like I haven’t slept properly.
Is this just what happens when you’re 47 and does it ever get better?

40 and cannot remember the last time I woke up feeling OK. Doesn't matter how much sleep I get - I feel as if I have had next to none and spend every waking hour feeling exhausted.

Diet and exercise is my issue. Am overweight and unfit.

creamofcarnation · 24/06/2019 21:09

Following, I'm 46 and think I'm peri

OneTownsVeryLikeAnother · 24/06/2019 21:09

Magnesium sorted me out. I had heavy legs and joint pain, generally felt achy and creaky, plus always woke up with a sore jaw from teeth grinding.

@JMAngel1 That sounds good. How much do you take and where do you buy it?

Floopily · 24/06/2019 21:14

I'm 46 and most mornings my first thought is 'shit how much did I drink last night?!' until I realise I didn't drink at all and remember I now wake up every morning feeling like this. I'm convinced it's the menopause sneaking up on me

SallyWD · 24/06/2019 21:18

Yes. I'm 44 always wake up feeling stiff, tired and grumpy. I'm often very tired throughout the day and longing for bedtime.

JMAngel1 · 24/06/2019 21:29

I get my supplements from amazon. I take 800mg of magnesium citrate and 800mg ashwaghanda at night.

ineedaknittedhat · 24/06/2019 21:41

Yes, but I started taking high dose vitamin D and I feel amazing now. Pain has completely gone, I have more energy and no depression or anxiety.

BooseysMom · 24/06/2019 21:43

I'm 47 and have horrendous hormonal/peri symptoms although periods are regular every 28 days. I wake up at 3am every night. Tried to cut down caffeine and carbs and only have a tiny bit of wine every night. About a quarter of a small glass. It's vital i have this so i guess i must be an alcoholic! Confused Anyway i had bloods and thyroid checked and all ok. Still exhausted every day and i've actually suddenly
got wider in shape like my mum was...aagghh!! Please tell me it gets better someone!Shock

TooOldForAllThatShit · 24/06/2019 21:51

I felt like this along with chronic back pain until I started regular exercise including weight lifting (very important). It really does help. I'm overweight and was very unfit too but can now manage Level 14 on the Xtrainer after 8 weeks. Well only for a minute but I started out only just being able to do Level 1 for a max of 5 minutes, now I can do 20+ minutes at a stable Level 6 increasing up to higher levels for a minute at a time.

That along with turmeric, and just recently started magnesium, supplements.

HundredMilesAnHour · 24/06/2019 21:55

I'm 49 and in peri. Dreading the summer as I feel so hot at night (already!) and it makes it impossible to sleep.

A few years ago I was very overweight (5 stone heavier than I should be!), didn't exercise and when I got out of bed in the morning, my legs were really stiff. I would struggle to go down stairs normally until my legs 'warmed up'. I remembering thinking "it's all downhill from here". Then I thought "bugger that!" So I lost all the weight and now I spend 2 hours (weights, HIIT, yoga) in the gym 6 days a week and I look and feel fantastic. My joints still take longer to get moving than they did when I was younger and I avoid anything high impact for the first 15 mins of a workout but I can hold my own against the twentysomethings, and often do better than them, and I hold my own against the men my own age. It took a year of hard work to get to this point but it's a relief to realise that it was my lifestyle that was doing the damage rather than my age!! Being so active has turned my life around.

I rarely drink alcohol (but it happens occasionally) but drink 2.5 litres of water daily and I limit myself to 2 coffees a day (before 1pm). I treat to eat lots of fruit and veg but also indulge in cake and chocolate and the (more than) occasional Ginger Pig sausage roll. I take a variety of supplements (fish oil, multivit, probiotics, turmeric, D3) and do monthly cycles of Valerian Root(450mg) or Melatonin (5mg) to help my sleep.

TooOldForAllThatShit · 24/06/2019 21:57

I've also got a dodgy thyroid and have been on thyroxine for 2 years. The meds haven't made a blind bit of difference to how I was feeling which was permanently knackered. I sleep better now I don't have chronic back pain though and that is down to exercise and the turmeric - well could be either or but I'm not stopping either of them to find out which!

SandraOhshair · 25/06/2019 07:21

@ineedaknittedhat have you bought the vitamin D over the counter? What constitutes a high dose?

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 25/06/2019 07:23

I was like this in my 30s! My doctor sent me to a rheumatologist and everything. I lost weight and stopped eating shit carbs and now (mid-40s) I feel as good as I did in my 20s.

LittleCandle · 25/06/2019 07:31

I'm 54 and it takes an act of God to get me out of bed each day. I have no thyroid and am menopausal, which doesn't help. I have felt - at best - low level crap every day since having my thyroid out and the meds don't help. If I am highly over medicated, I feel well, but the docs won't do that and are rigidly guided by the blood levels, even though they admit that optimum blood levels do not necessarily mean that the patient feels well. The endo actually wants to cut my drugs almost in half, although I can barely function as it is. I have no idea how I can continue to work for another 13 years. I have brain fog and fatigue and am on my feet all day at work. Getting old is shite.

TapasForTwo · 25/06/2019 07:34

SandraOhshair you can buy vitamin D in Holland and Barrett. Our GP recommended them as it is cheaper than paying for a prescription.

BernardoTeashop · 25/06/2019 08:08

Forgot to add earlier that I keep
Getting dizzy, especially in the mornings. Anyone got any insight into this?

AngelsWithSilverWings · 25/06/2019 08:18

I'm 49. Yoga has helped me feel better in the mornings.

Adversecamber22 · 25/06/2019 08:27

I had a couple of years where I was very achy and I have hypermobile joints anyway so am inclined to some mechanical issues. It was being menopausal and once I got through it the symptoms were gone. It was also when I became allergic to hair dye.

6utter6ean · 25/06/2019 08:28

I'm 47 and I feel generally OK. I wonder if, as others have said, it's diet and lifestyle driven? I exercise regularly, eat healthily and am slim.

However, I do like an afternoon nap now, which I don't see as a negative thing. My energy levels are high in the morning so I'm very active, but by 2pm I know that I need to recharge. Can't always do it, of course.

Fibbke · 25/06/2019 08:30

You need a new mattress!

Fibbke · 25/06/2019 08:34

I feel ok in the mornings now after a few years of feeling crap.

New mattress, hrt and exercise.

PostNotInHaste · 25/06/2019 08:34

49 and feel like shit most mornings, blood fine and I rattle with supplements. I’m in medically induced menopause as of 3 weeks ago and am very hacked off.

Fibbke · 25/06/2019 08:35

Oh, and no alcohol during the week. I'm 52. No supplements, can't be bothered with them and they cost a fortune.

Ragwort · 25/06/2019 08:39

No, I never feel like that, I am over 60, overweight and not very fit but I always feel ‘healthy’ and ready to face the day. I do have a very good mattress though (& I insist my DH sleeps in his own bedroom Grin).
