Kindle eReader - terminally flat battery - help 😭

I have a very old and much loved 3rd generation Kindle keyboard. I haven't used it for about 6 months (exactly 6 months - I last read it whilst I was in labour!). Naturally the battery is totally flat and it's displaying the battery empty screen. This has happened before but always resolved with charging.

It's been on charge for 12 hours now (charging light still orange so not fully charged which is my only glimmer of potential hope right now) and I cannot get it to switch on.

The reading light (in the photo) is built in to the case and runs off of the Kindle battery itself. Initially the light would not turn on (battery totally empty) but now it does, which suggests the Kindle thinks it's switched on. I've tried the reset as per the instructions on the screen several times and it's still dead.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can resuscitate my kindle? I love it. It's the perfect size, it doesn't have a stupid backlit screen, I love the case with the built in light. I don't want to have to replace it with a stupid new one, these ones are so difficult to get hold of second hand.

Help! 😭

Oh god, will be no help but I totally sympathise, when my button Kindle broke for good and I moved to touch screen I wanted to cry (and still do!!) I'm assuming you've held down the on/ off switch for a long period of time? Also try to contact Amazon on it and see if there is anything they can do. Best of luck!

SkydivingKittyCat · 23/06/2019 22:13

Yep I've been trying it periodically all day 😭

Read on the Amazon help page thing to hold it for 40 seconds to reset (rather than 15) and that made the light go off and back on again (as if it had reset) but still nothing.

Maybe see if you can contact Amazon then, it would be great if they could fix it instead of having to get a new one!

SkydivingKittyCat · 23/06/2019 22:40

I'll see what happens in the morning, it'll have been charging for a continuous 24hrs then

I reset my dead kindle, I think by holding the power button down for 40 or so seconds. Have it plugged into the charger and it should then charge.

SummerLove2306 · 23/06/2019 22:46

What happens if you take it off charge, hold the button to reset it then pop it back on?

SummerLove2306 · 23/06/2019 22:46

On charge that should be!

Absolutely nothing

Have tried this. It's definitely charging as the light is now working.

I had this. When I plugged it in at the wall it didn't charge but I read online that slow charging worked better so I plugged it into my portable charging block and left it. I checked it 3 days later (I forgot about it) and it had recovered and was charged. After that it worked fine and charged from the wall socket again.

Davros · 23/06/2019 23:38

Good luck. I love my kindle and like having something that does one thing, not multi purpose

Whitelisbon · 23/06/2019 23:52

Dhs did that.
After a couple of days on charge it was fine, so it might come back to life yet.

scaryteacher · 24/06/2019 01:07

Get a new battery? I had the battery changed in my Fire, and it's fine again. Will be getting ds's Kindle battery replaced when next in the UK.

I doubt that's possible, it's almost 10 years old. I bought it in 2010 when they first came out.

The stories of long charging give me some hope! Just up to feed the baby and it's still charging, still orange....

I had similar with my touch screen one that had been dead for months. It did eventually come to life but definitely took days.

Not helpful possibly but the paperwhite ones are not really back lit like a tablet, it's more a glow around the edge and it can be turned off completely when there is enough light to read by.

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/06/2019 06:56

The paperwhites aren't 'stupid'. You can have the light turned quite low (I keep mine on setting 6 out of 20) and in daylight it looks exactly the same as an unlit kindle and you can only see the light when you are reading it in darkness.

If your kindle is dead, get one of those, you won't regret it.

BadnessInTheFolds · 24/06/2019 07:00

Another positive story of slow charging for days here. Nothing after 36 hours, assumed it was gone... Left it plugged in for about a week (forgot about it!) and it recovered!
Have had to factory reset mine a couple of times when it forgot how to connect to WiFi as well but it sorted itself out. Good luck!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 24/06/2019 07:02

My paperwhite did this last year. It had an update waiting, I updated and it was fine after.

SkydivingKittyCat · 24/06/2019 09:21

heavenly music and angels flying by

A good 36+ hours charging and we it lives!! The battery is still showing on the lowest level but it's actively charging so I'm hopeful for a favourable prognosis and full recovery.

I guess it just takes a lot longer than anticipated to resurrect a totally flat battery.

I doubt that's possible, it's almost 10 years old. I bought it in 2010 when they first came out. Try Googling OP...you'd be amazed at the amount of batteries and YouTube videos on how to source and replace batteries for these.

Find out who does this in your local area...they can get the batteries for you. I used a bloke on the market local to my Mum who replaced a battery in one of my Fires and a shattered screen on the other. He'll do Kindle ereader batteries as well. If you don't look, or ask, you won't find out!

If I can get replacement batteries for my very old Gameboys and my ancient TomTomOne, then they are out there for your Kindle.

SkydivingKittyCat · 24/06/2019 12:47

It lives!! Fully charged and in full working order!

babysharkah · 24/06/2019 13:07

For future reference, I had one of the very very original kindles, died after about two years, spoke to amazon, free upgraded replacement, that then broke, free upgraded replacement. That one died too - battery issues - and I got a new one for 50%. their customer service is great ime.

BadnessInTheFolds · 24/06/2019 18:13

Oh that is a small thing that has made me smile today!
