Anyone broken their heel?

Stupid accident earlier... was holding one twin having a cuddle, the other twin wheeled his scuttlebug thing behind me without me realising. Turned around and lifted my leg to step over the small toys I thought were there - not entirely sure what happened but my foot slammed down very hard on to the little trike (not sure which part) which sent me flying still holding one toddler. Managed to stop him getting hurt by landing on the sofa, but holy crap does my heel hurt.

Dr Google says it’s very hard to break your heel and generally happens from falling off ladders, car accidents etc, so I doubt it. I can walk on the ball of my foot but can’t put my heel down, and there’s a pulling sort of pain up the back of my heel / behind my ankle. But the info I read did say that you may still be able to walk unless it’s really severe. Looking at it there’s a small patch of swelling and it looks like some bruising is brewing.

I really don’t want to go to A&E if it’s highly unlikely I’ve broken it, and there’s no minor injuries units here so that’s the only way to get an X-ray. Out of hours or GP will only send you there.

Just going to take painkillers and sleep on it but just wondering if anyone has actually had this injury from something relatively innocuous?

Could you have damaged you Achilles' tendon rather than your actual heel maybe?

My dad did years and years ago after falling from the top of a barn. He tried to jump after the ladder fell down. He crawled a mile home (we lived very rurally) and was found in bed with his shot gun whilst on the phone to 999 calling an ambulance. Apparently the pain is unbearable and the worst bone you can break as it bears all of your weight.

Get yourself checked out.

Yeah you need to get it x-rayed. Your choice to sleep on it and get it looked at tomorrow! As Tricorne says it could be your Achilles’ tendon. My Dad ruptured his falling off a ladder! He had pain initially but the rupture was missed for weeks, a physio picked up the loss of power and that’s when it was diagnosed. Definitely get it checked out though.

Xray.

You really don't want to go through the rest of your life with a buggered leg that could've been fixed.

That’s it, I think it mostly happens from from falls from great heights / very high impact, plus it’s not excruciating in that way.

I don’t think - this morning it still hurts to put my heel down but it’s quite focussed to one small patch under my heel (I can see a bit of bruising in the middle but it’s just a bit of a dark patch, nothing obvious) so I think it’s probably just that that’s causing the pain.

I’ll see how I get on this morning, I worry I would be laughed out of there with this! I had a very dramatic looking ankle injury once that wasn’t fractured (it was black down both sides of my foot and so swollen) so I feel a bit daft.

is does sound a bit like a tendon injury.
how is the up-and-down movement of the foot?

Fine, last night there was some pulling pain but I suspect that was because I was holding my foot strangely - after a sleep that’s gone and it only hurts if I put my heel down. I’m 99.9% sure it would be worse than this today if there was an actual fracture, but you never know - I fractured my humerus as a child and carried on for a week before I ended up in A&E. It hurt but I was managing okay. I’ve had sprains that looked and felt much worse (I was very accident prone in my youth as you can tell!)

Will rest it today and see how it goes - will go if it gets worse, or maybe in the morning after we drop the twins at nursery early, at least it will be quieter and I won’t be such an inconvenience!
