After some holiday reading for DD. Can anyone recommend any good autobiographies or band books please. Am probably going to get her Scar Tissue by Anthony Keidis as she loves RHCP. What else should I be looking for TIA.

Courtney Love: The Real Story by Poppy Z. Brite

Wakeupalready · 22/06/2019 21:15

Girl in A band - Kim Gordon.
This is a call - The life and time of Dave Grohl by Paul Brannigan
Just Kids - Patti Smith ( inclides a lot about Robert Mapplethorpe, but the writing is stunning)

Just an an aside - there is some fairly detailed heavy accounts of hard-core drug use in Scar Tissue and The Courtney Love book - but the same can be said for a lot of rock biographies.
And I'm sure you know what your DD can handle.

Scar Tissue is extremely no-holds-barred on hard drug use and sex. 13 might be a little young for it as it’s very heavy going.

Scar Tissue details how Anthony Kiedis dad started sexually sharing his girlfriends with a young Anthony when he was 13, and also about how he took lots of drugs and fucked lots of women from being a very young teen.

From what I remember Slash's autobiography and The Dirt by Motley Crue were equally shocking (having threesome's with groupies, dabbling in the occult and overdosing).

Just wanted to let you know because they are pretty graphic for a 13 year old.

SassyBadger · 22/06/2019 21:16

Marianne Faithfull – Faithfull

John Lydon – Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs

Not a rock biog as such but Sylvia Patterson's 'I'm Not With The Band is very good.

SassyBadger · 22/06/2019 21:17

Yeah, I was trying to think if most rock biogs are suitable for a 13 year old but I remember reading Wonderland Avenue at that age agog. Came to no harm! Grin

CallingOnAvengingAngels · 22/06/2019 21:18

Just Kids - Patti Smith is great, and I think OK for a 13 year old - hardly any sex, little bits about drug use, but nothing graphic.

weebarra · 22/06/2019 21:18

Kim Gordon's Girl in a band is good.

SassyBadger · 22/06/2019 21:19

Motley Crue biogs are far more interesting than the band's actual (crappy) music. They embraced that lifestyle to the max.

What music is she into? My DH reads nothing but music biographies so could recommend some if he knew what music/bands she is into. .

Not really rock music but Louise Wener ( of Sleeper) Just for one day is a great read. Starts with stories about her discovering music as a teenager and then her time in the band during the Brit pop period.

Also I'm not with the Band by Sylvia Patterson is fantastic. She started as a writer for Smash Hits and tells stories about her experiences interviewing various pop and rock starts.

Finally another recommendation is I want my MTV by Rob Tannenbaum - a history of MTV with stories about the making of lots of iconic music videos.

DH recommends a book by Viv Albertine - I've not read it but he says its excellent!

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 22/06/2019 21:22

Hmmmm I'm pretty ok with hard core drug abuse. She's seen the scars on John Frusciante's arms and know how they came about. Hard core sex, maybe not so much Grin. Then again, I'm pretty sure I was reading my mum's Harold Robbins books at her age

Angels she loves rock/funk/indie music. She plays the bass. And that is the kind of music she plays.

The Viv Albertine book is Clothes Clothes Clothes Music Music Music Boys Boys Boys.

If you are okay with the drug side of things there an awesome fiction book out called Daisy Jones and the Six - By Taylor Jenkins Reid. Its about a fictions band ( that's an amalgamation of a number of popular 70's band mythologies ) . It's an unputdownable book.

scrappydappydoo · 22/06/2019 21:26

Hmm I remember reading Jim Morrison’s ‘no one gets out of here alive’ around that age but I can’t remember it being explicit in any way

Wakeupalready · 22/06/2019 21:27

If she plays bass get her Girl in A band - Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth.

Wakeupalready · 22/06/2019 21:28

( my spelling is terrible, but it's really early here)

AngelsWithSilverWings · 22/06/2019 21:40

DH suggests Our Band Could be your Life by Michael Azerrad.

Also he says she absolutely must read Can't buy me Love by Jonathan Gould.

SkintAsASkintThing · 22/06/2019 21:45

This monster lives is a good read. It's a book about the Metallica documentary some kind of monster. Which is also well worth a watch.
