Tell me about your local animals

Where I live, there's a one-legged seagull that some people call The Flamingull and others call Steven SeaGULL. He is fairly tame and hops from car to car on his single leg, across the roofs and bonnets in town.

I expect there are unowned or wild animals in other towns that have been named or recognised by locals for various reasons, and it felt like a good weekend thread idea Grin Care to share?

Did you see the story about The King of Ruddington?

PineappleSeahorse That's a great story - Wilbur must be very affectionate to be so accepted!

Walkamileinmyshoesbeforeujudge Aw, lovely! Same bunch that turn up every time?

We don’t really have any “pet” wild animals, but we usually see the same animals in the same area.

Such as a mated pair of swans. They always nest up in one end, and then slowly bring the cygnets down. By the time the cygnets are adults, they are in the middle of town (we have a river) and you can see them nicely.

We also have muntjac deer that are regularly seen in the cemetery. Squirrels (grey) ducks, geese, greebes, moorhens, coots, hedgehogs, foxes and regular species of birds

We have a cat who lives in the local pound stretcher. The staff used to try and shoo him away but they've given up now. He's been there at least 5 years, just sits on the shelves watching shoppers!

BlackForestChateau · 22/06/2019 19:05

Soubriquet Wow! How long have they been mated for? Does anyone know?

Jemma2907 Brilliant... does he give them judgey looks?

No idea! I’ve seen the same pair since I was a teen so a good 10-15 years at least.

tierraJ · 22/06/2019 19:12

My neighbours cat is now called "killer kitty" after it caught a pigeon half its size (which luckily escaped).

There's "Lily cat' a gorgeous fluffy cat who lives nearby.

The squizzer- a fat squirrel who lives in a tree next door.

And Coco the cat with 'do not feed me' on his collar.

Scott the bouncy Staffy who's a little scary.

managedmis · 22/06/2019 19:14

We had a raccoon trapped in the wheelie bin last week. It had been in there at least a few days.

I am a chicken so waited till DH got home to let it out. It looked pretty startled when DH topped the bin over to let it scuttle out.

Wheelie stank afterwards....

BlackForestChateau · 22/06/2019 19:14

tierraJ Okay, Coco must come with a story...

Not a wild animal but a neighbour has a three legged cat called Colin. Everyone loves him.

myidentitymycrisis · 22/06/2019 19:19

Our local library has a very pampered cat called Royston who must live near by but spends all day asleep in a chair. The kids live him and he gets very spoilt.

FernieB · 22/06/2019 19:25

I have a pigeon who follows me round the garden and occasionally wanders into the kitchen to see what I'm doing. And my rockery is currently doing service as a 'hedgehog Love Island' in the evening.

bellinisurge · 22/06/2019 19:27

Our back neighbour's chimney has had jackdaws in for as long as we have been here - over 10 years , probably longer. She died recently and we are hoping the new owners (her kids) leave them be. Doubt they will, though Sad

TheJoxter · 22/06/2019 19:28

Mabel the town cat

BlackForestChateau · 22/06/2019 19:45

MollysMummy2010 When I was a kid my own cat was the library cat! We lived two doors down and he used to hop through the window and potter among Romance and Crime.

I have Waggy the Wagtail. He waits for his breakfast on our kitchen windowsill every morning, right up against the glass.
I love him.
There's also Nigel the Hedgehog. He is the biggest, fattest hunk of a hog that has ever been seen. No need to weigh him for health, he's the size of a melon. because he scoffs a saucer of hedgehog food every night
I also have a family of sparrows who visit every day.
And a Robin who I hand reared 3 years ago. If there's no food on the bird table he just flies through our usually open top bit of kitchen window and hops about on the table. He also appears whenever I'm gardening and will still occasionally fly onto my finger.
He's called Batman.

Past few days there's an extreme constant-alarm-call-prone blackbird who pops out whenever I pick raspberries. You would think * I * am the scary cat she needs to warn everyone about.

There's a tortoiseshell cat mugging for cuddles from officeworkers, always out & about on my work to shops lunchtime walk every day.

One local huge black cat the kids know well. They named him Sausage & Bacon he's so fat.

Sometimes we get pheasants in the garden. And a lot of frogs, some newts & toads. Mostly my cats devastate local wildlife, though.

FijateBien · 22/06/2019 20:24

All my local animals are caged or barned and slaughtered. Y'know, coz we love some, prey on others......

Otterses · 22/06/2019 20:53

Big, terrifying, feral looking peacock.

I think it actually scares off any other wildlife.

lljkk · 22/06/2019 20:57

oh yeah... surburbs where my cousins live is famous for small flocks of wandering peahens & peacocks. They keep daily routines where they go, too.

Otterses · 22/06/2019 20:58

@lljkk Shock

I hope there's only one! It screams in the middle of the night and lives in a tree. It's terrifying. I couldn't cope with hoards of peacocks.
