Where I live, there's a one-legged seagull that some people call The Flamingull and others call Steven SeaGULL. He is fairly tame and hops from car to car on his single leg, across the roofs and bonnets in town.

I expect there are unowned or wild animals in other towns that have been named or recognised by locals for various reasons, and it felt like a good weekend thread idea Grin Care to share?

We have 3 foxes that sit on my neighbour's shed every evening. I swear they only do it to torture my dog!

MadCap · 22/06/2019 21:06

@Otterses my sister's uni had flocks of peacocks. They issued rape whistles to everyone because campus security kept getting calls about women screaming HELP!!

lljkk · 22/06/2019 21:49

That's the weird thing... there aren't a lot of screaming males terrorising anyone. More like large flocks of females. Maybe the too-bolshy male gene got knocked out, Darwinism?

Speaking of which, my Mrs. Blackbird is twittering head off, right now. Maybe she'll shut up if I get my cats in.

Bit noisy...

madcatladyforever · 22/06/2019 22:29

I have a fox that likes to shit on my doorstep.

Didiusfalco · 22/06/2019 22:36

That sounds lovely LooBrush are you quite rural? What kind of wagtail is waggy?

floraloctopus · 22/06/2019 22:43

Just about every bird species, I fill four feeders daily!

Cherrysoup · 22/06/2019 22:50

Goldfinches on the mini waterfall in the garden pond, muntjac in the local woods. Blasted new cat that walks down the windscreen of whichever car is parked next to the fence every single morning.

At work, there’s a garden quad with lots of fruit trees and the fattest squidgiest looking grey squirrel that somehow is still very agile. I dunno how he got in given it’s surrounded by 2 storey buildings and is totally enclosed. He’s alone, it occurs to me that we should trap/release him in a safe area (don’t think you’re allowed to release grey squirrels)

IhaveALooBrush · 22/06/2019 22:55

Didiusfalco
Not at all, we're the beginnings of suburbs for a city. We do have a park and a patch of woodland less than 200 yards away though and a patch of scrub between housing estates.
Waggy is small and black and white. He showed up once when it was bitterly cold and that was it, every morning he would be there waiting.
We also have a bat who I like to watch and a resident tawny owl.
The owl I think lives in the park. He hoots all night sometimes and once I've seen him sitting on next door's chimney when having a late night fag so he must hunt in the patch of scrub sometimes.
DH refuses any pets so I have been overly invested in local wildlife! Grin
I'm going to start fostering hedgehogs soon which I am very excited about.

Gertie75 · 22/06/2019 23:00

A pair of wild boar and their piglets (not sure if that's the right name) appeared recently, caused chaos as they were fairly tame so happily wandered around in plain sight, it's assumed someone tried to reintroduce them to the wild sneakily but they were more interested in breaking into the local farms food store, eating as much as they could then falling asleep.

They've now been sent off to live in captivity again somewhere.

managedmis · 23/06/2019 01:52

God and I thought my racoon was exotic!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 23/06/2019 01:56

Moose, brown bears, coyotes, wolves, lynx. You have an outdoor cat at your peril round here.

We occasionally see caribou as we head out of town.

ElizabethMainwaring · 23/06/2019 02:16

Ihavealoobrush, if the tawny owl makes twit sounds it's male, if it makes woo sounds it's female. Enjoying all these posts!

fuzzy as hell as rainy and dark, but proof that our Mrs Munter is now a mummy

Our main home is in a town so not a lot to see there . Plenty of seagulls as we live a mile from the sea.
Our country home ( caravan) is a bit different. From out balcony we see many birds of prey . The owner has chickens who have adopted us and poo on our balcony 😡
Then there’s Wild rabbits. There’s a farm about a 5 minute walk away that has lots of different species of chicks and we get our eggs there. It’s a stud farm and a mare was in a field close to the chickens with her foal. When we drive a bit further up the road we always see hares and pheasants and alpacas.
There’s a fabulous lake up there , we’ve spotted loads of wildlife deer, about 20 swans, more ducks and Friday night we were delighted when a blue heron flew overhead and settled in the trees.
I did a late night drive over not much more than a carttrack a couple of weeks ago. A startled deer had the sense to run away but two badgers practically through themselves under the car wheels.
I must admit we haven’t seen as many pheasants as we did last year...they were practically throwing themselves under our wheels. Did they breed more because it was hotter and sunnier last year..I don’t know. We see the occasional fox but not a lot.
There’s often a flock of sheep in the field next door but not this year.

Oh and the insects 😡

Decormad38 · 23/06/2019 07:04

We have Crowmagna - because he's a crow that looks like a Neanderthal.
Plus Mangetail - a fox that seems to have a stick for a tail!

sqirrelfriends · 23/06/2019 07:12

We have an extremely fat pigeon affectionately named "fat pigeon" he literally makes the fence shake when he lands. Fat pigeon likes to sit out of reach of the cat and taunt him.

Al203 · 23/06/2019 07:49

We have Lazy Badger who just drops down for a kip by the side of the road from time to time.

Mia184 · 23/06/2019 08:04

We have a lot of fawns at the moment. I volunteer at a local farmers’ union as a fawn searcher. The fawns are still quite small so if a farmer mows a field, they tend to duck to the ground instead of running away and end up getting killed.
So before a farmer mows a field, he (it has never been a she so far) informs the union who informs us volunteers. There is usually a group of 10-20 volunteers plus the farmer and occasionally a local hunter (to guide us). We then walk across the field and - if we spot a fawn - mark the spot (so far, the fawns were always removed by their mothers when we checked on the way back.
Even if we didn’t spot a fawn - the scents that we leave behind is a deterrent for deers so that the will hopefully avoid those fields. Plus the farmers don’t mow all the fields in a given area so that the deers have sufficient places available for them and their fawns.
The fawn in the picture is one of 9 fawns we recently spotted when we went across two fields.

We had an enormous hedgehog that used to visit us last year and help himself to our outdoor cat’s food. Literally the biggest hedgehog I’ve ever seen - we named him Hank.
There a flock (??) of ducks in the village who appear to have forgotten how to be wild ducks as the community have started to look after them. They’ve become pleasantly plump little things since being fed gourmet meals every day! The only issue that he arisen is the female ducks are now questionable parents...it’s as if they assume the humans will save their young from any danger. At least once a week I have to stop my car in the middle of the road to herd ducklings across the road to their mother who stands on the kerb looking at them like “well I thought you just knew you should follow me!” Confused

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 23/06/2019 08:20

We have a cat who loves a few doors down who everyone calls Sam-cat. I doubt very much it's her actual name but our neighbour gave her the name and it stuck. She's never allowed in the house and sleeps in our shed which has a handy cat hole cut in the door 😁

We also have a mad pair of tawny owls at the end of our garden named Mr and Mrs Twit and a very, very large colony of jackdaws who have spent the last week making as much noise as possible. There's probably about 100 over there at the moment and all their youngsters have been fledging so we've been enjoying watching the drama, especially when they were joined by a massive heron which set them off for hours!

Occasionally the village also has a very loud peacock from one of the local farms come for a visit but thankfully he doesn't come down our way as by all accounts he's very loud 😁

BlackForestChateau · 23/06/2019 09:03

My faves are definitely the ones that have gained names rather than just being part of the landscape!

Fat Pigeon and Lazy Badger should be a comicbook.
