Toy Story 4

Has anyone else seen it. I cried, actually sobbed. My eldest is 17 and he came with me, DS2 and DD. It was like the official ending to his childhood so I was extra weepy annd so was he.

It seems like only yesterday that he had a very annoying Buzz Lightyear toy that he was obsessed with.

I've got wine.

Is it safe for children with dangerous absent fathers or have Pixar done their usual absent parents are great people really just victims of circumstances? (Coco, Finding Dory)

LucilleBluth · 22/06/2019 22:35

Ok. The franchise really revolves around Woody. Look at this film as The Woody Story. He needs to be wanted, it's his reason d'etre. He's like a parent who's child has flown the nest and needs to find meaning for himself. He can no longer live to please others.

It's a tale of change and existential angst told through the story of a toy. As we move forward we can never really go back.

This film is the culmination of 20 odd years.

The ultimate lesson of Toy Story is that we have to keep moving forward because life never slows down and waits.

I'm am three wines in though.

We saw it tonight. My kids are 5 and 9 and we all loved it. The Toy Story films are some of my favourite films of all time.

It was very funny and moving. I did cry but not as much as when watching TS3. I sobbed at the ending of that film. I can’t even think about Andy giving the toys to Bonnie. It was the most perfect ending. Such clever films that mirror milestones in all our lives.

LookWhosInTheRejectBin · 22/06/2019 22:48

Aah, TS 2 was the first film I ever saw in a cinema. TS 3 felt really symbolic to me, when Andy gives Woody away. Like, you're grown up now, time to let go.Really powerful.

Does 4 ruin the sentiment of the 3rd?

user1471530109 · 22/06/2019 23:10

We saw it today. Dd9 was/is a massive toy story fan. She paid for a buzz light year in the Disney shop with her dummies (gave up her dummy for buzz).

She was disappointed with ts4.

I loved it. Very clever. Tied up all the loose ends for woody that were left with No Peep Grin. Only criticism was I missed buzz, rex etc. They needed a bigger part.
Not sure on the ending. Was right for woody. At least for that moment. Definitely open for a further film. But also a v decent close.

Bloody Bo! Not No!

MsPavlichenko · 22/06/2019 23:16

Mark Kermode's review pretty much nails it for me I think.

The sadness is different from Three, which is much more focused on the bittersweet feelings around children growing up I think.

Still brilliant imo.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 22/06/2019 23:18

I was so disappointed with the ending Sad

Not a recent thing. Bambi?

MrsApplepants · 22/06/2019 23:22

I saw it today. I loved it. I cried at the ending, but I think it ended right. Those ventriloquist dolls are scary though!!

Roselinemac · 22/06/2019 23:24

I didn't think TS4 was that good, TS3 was the best IMO, upsets me every time watching them go towards the incinerator. No 4 was a bit rubbish story, I expected more. Maybe my 4 year old spoilt it by going the toilet throughout the film, especially towards the end 🙄 but I think he was bored too.

Meline · 22/06/2019 23:25

I wasn’t crazy about it. The writing wasn’t as tight as the first three, and with all the new characters, the old gang apart from Woody were criminally underused. There were delights — Duke Kaboom, Bunny and Ducky, Forkie — and the animation was even more gorgeous, but Gabby Gabby wasn’t an interesting villain, and I think Mr Pricklepants got one line.

fresh · 22/06/2019 23:38

Just seen it with Ds1 (22) and DS2 (20). They (and I) grew up with it and we all loved it. Just the opening music got me so there were definitely tears at the end here! I thought Woody’s decision felt a bit rushed at the end but looking back I can see the whole film is building up to it. Is it tragic that I want to see it again??

TeeBee · 22/06/2019 23:42

It was favourite one yet. Really funny. I giggled the whole way through.

LucilleBluth · 23/06/2019 07:36

DH didn't come with us. I think I'll drag him to it and watch it again.

I thought TS3 ended the franchise nicely especially as it involved Andy moving to college. This one is just a money grab.

autumnleaves15 · 23/06/2019 08:27

Summary of thoughts:

I saw it last night and found it really funny. I loved forkie and the bunny. I did miss some of the original characters as some have already said. I think the creepy dolls are a bit scary for young kids! It was a little sad at the end but I didn't cry (and I sobbed at TS3). I'm glad Jessie wasn't in it much as I can't stand her.

Order of preference: TS1, TS4, TS3, TS2.

Sonicknuckles · 23/06/2019 08:28

Agreed. Also what's with Bo having a complete personality transplant and really shiny face. She looked different.

icebearforpresident · 23/06/2019 14:30

Just back from the cinema with DH and the kids and we all loved it. I cried and the kids looked at me like I was a nutter (they just don’t understand!!)

As well as the collapsing woody I want a duke kaboom toy for Christmas.

Satsuma1234 · 23/06/2019 18:26

I adore toy story. Really love it but i didn’t like this one and I didn’t like the end. Gutted.

Whyareweallhere · 23/06/2019 19:04

Just got back with 7 year old. The old gang were barely in it. ☹️And I don’t be think woody was true to character. Needed more fun too.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 23/06/2019 19:16

I think Bo’s shiny face is testament to how much CGI has improved. She’s glazed ceramic.

peg90 · 23/06/2019 19:30

I was too pissed off with Woody at the end to be upset!
Not enough of Buzz, Rex etc either.
The bit with Gabby Gabby made my eyes leak though! Grin

RagingWhoreBag · 23/06/2019 19:33

There were a lot of laughs, but it wasn't as touching as the others have been. I went fully expecting to cry (as I do with most films!) but didn't even well up. I liked it but I didn't love it.

Wish I'd known that Duke Kaboom was voiced by Keanu Reeves though! Saw his name on the end credits and was v surprised.
