Hairdressers: is it best to dye your hair when it's clean or dirty?

I dye my hair at home (permanent dye) - can't afford to go to a salon. Anyway, is it better to dye your hair when it is dirty or clean? have heard differing advice.

Not a hairdresser but been dying my hair for almost 10 years at home. I always found the colour lasted just a little better and came out a bit truer to the box if my hair was washed the day before I dyed it and then nothing put on since such as hair spray or dry shampoo. It just didn't "stick" as well if it was the same day as a hair wash or if it was in need of a wash if that makes sense

No product and not just washed is what I was told.

One day dirty hair always is what I have been told and gone by, and it works for me.

My hairdresser has always asked me to go with as dirty hair as i can bear!
Would say though shop around for hairdresser mine only costs £40 for cut colour style and id need at least two boxes of colour to do my own and it seems to last over double the time so overall it might not work out much more to have it done at the hairdressers

I'm getting highlights today and washed my hair yesterday morning. Hairdresser prefers if it's not perfectly clean as it's too soft and flyaway

Oh and also (forgot to put in original msg) - how long after dyeing can you wash your hair? a friend reckons give it a week before using 'proper' shampoo - just use dry shampoo instead. Thoughts?

I am a qualified hairdresser and I shampoo mine straight away.

Oooh I did my own hair colour first time ever a couple of weeks back (normal done at hairdressers but need to cut back finances 😬)

I've always heard slightly dirty is best? And the box of colour I used said "wash hair day before use - do not condition hair" (the no condition was tough!)

Once I'd coloured it, i shampoo'd and conditioned with the products supplied (which left my hair greasy - yuk 🤢🤢) so next time will use my own shampoo etc which is for coloured hair anyway 😉

Also don't forget the patch test!!

Just to add, I wash my hair once a week and usually dye my hair when it’s been 6/7 days and it always takes really well so personally I just think it’s best not to have squeaky clean hair :)
