Is this wrong? Pay and notice period

I've posted this in Employment as well but hoping for more traffic here...

My DB has handed in his notice. Contractual notice is 3 months. Employer is asking him to leave earlier, but not pay his notice. This doesn't sound right to me. Any employment law/HR bods able to clarify?

If they are requesting him to leave earlier they should pay out the remainder of his notice period, if he were requesting it they don't
