Where can I take the DCs on the Welsh coast by train?

I want to take the children away for a while in the summer. Ages 7 and 13. DP can't come as work for him looks super busy this summer. I want to go somewhere that's got a nice beach, opportunities for lovely walks , maybe some historical interest, somewhere i might be able to get a b&b or cheapish hotel (ideally I'd like a cottage but not sure budget will stretch at that time of year). Where ever it is needs to be accessible by train. Once I'm there, I dont really want to have to leave until we are going back if that makes sense.

If anyone can suggest somewhere please do.

Not sure about trains but Pembrokeshire has a great coastal bus service so you won't be restricted once you are there. Look into taking a coach which is a lot cheaper in rural areas.

@papergirl1968 I love that house. Its beautiful

Do you know if the beach is safe for swimming? If so, I'm sold. Its about 15 minutes walk from station so should be fine :)

It is a beautiful house and I’d say only ten mins walk from the station, although yeah, maybe 15 if pulling cases etc! It’s all flat though.
Hmm, safe for swimming depends on the conditions. It can be calm as a millpond or the waves can be a bit rough if it’s windy. It’s fairly safe if you’re sensible, I’d say, but keep a close eye on kids as there’s no lifeguard.
The best thing about those houses is that you come out of the back garden gate, across a path, and you’re on the beach. We live in the midlands too so I love my holidays by the sea and going to sleep at night to the sound of the waves!

Not Rhyl.

Gower is glorious! Train to Swansea then a £15 taxi over. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world!

Another vote for Tenby here. There is a fantastic b&b about 30 seconds from the station, you don’t need a car, the beach is beautiful and the bus service is good enough to get out to Folly Farm, Saundersfoot etc.

So excited.

I've booked a week in Tywyn in the house suggested by @papergirl1968. Amazingly they had exactly the week I wanted. The country side and beach looks gorgeous. DS especially loves steam trains so that will be perfect. DD really exctied because apparently you sometimes see dolphins on that bit of the coast (hope we can find her some) We've got a cottage with all the freedom that brings instead of being stuck in one room in a hotel. Buckets, spades and ice cream here we come

Book train tickets, tesco delivery for most things but ordering gousto box for some of the evening meals.

Just a bit nervous never taken children away for a week by myself before and never by train, but determined ot make it work.

Thank you all so much for your help. I'm so glad I asked... I'd never have found that cottage by myself either.

Great news. Have a lovely holiday. I've not been there.

AuntieMarys · 24/06/2019 18:27

You will love it. My dad was from there..lots of happy memories of holidays. Do get the train to Aberdyfi....stunning beach, crabbing off the pier, lovely walks..go to Penhelig .

Abergele/Llandudno/Conwy. Lots to do here, lots to see. Beach to the north, hills to the south. Lots of history and the public transport is great for getting about 👍

Papergirl1968 · 24/06/2019 22:30

Ahh, so glad Lists. I really hope you love Tywyn as much as we do. I should work for the Tywyn tourist board, lol.
If there’s any questions you think of, just give me a shout.

DoraNora · 25/06/2019 15:40

Yay! You'll have an amazing time - I wonder if we'll be in Tywyn the same week? Wink

Definitely definitely crab fish in Aberdovey. It is mandatory. I also really rate the Sea Breeze for a special meal (also in Aberdovey). Walk there along the beach from Tywyn to really earn your lunch 😁

If you need supplies there's a big co-op, and a cinema for rainy days.

Have a wonderful time!

Have a lovely time and book the train tickets now to get the cheaper prices.

Agree about Aberdovey as one thing to do.
