How often do you take your children in holiday? Including weekends?

OP posts:
needsleepzzz · 18/06/2019 10:16

3 main holidays a year, one for 2 weeks and 2 at 7-10 days.

We don't really do paid for weekend breaks as have IL's 3 hours south from us and BIL in the Lake District, so visits to them are weekends away.

Toddler is nearly 3 so thankfully not yet restricted to school holidays

DottieLottie1 · 18/06/2019 10:19

1 holiday abroad 10 nights.

2 x CPs weekends

3 x camping trips anything from 2 to 7 nights .

TeenTimesTwo · 18/06/2019 10:22

We are lucky to be able to go away twice a year on average, we don't tend to do weekends away.
Normally 2 weeks in the summer, and then a week at one of Feb or Easter.
We don't go 'abroad' every year, and have only been out of Europe once.

Wren77 · 18/06/2019 10:23

One holiday for 2 weeks in UK in the summer and the odd weekend in London/ staying in Lakes with family.

Walkamileinmyshoesbeforeujudge · 18/06/2019 10:24

3 camping trips and a caravan holiday. All UK.. All usually include rain.

babycakes1010 · 18/06/2019 10:30

2 times a year normally for 2 weeks at a time tho this summer we are doing a week as hoping to go away for Xmas

Mac47 · 18/06/2019 10:32

Holiday abroad every summer for a week. Then a city break at Easter and October, usually Europe somewhere.

ElizaPancakes · 18/06/2019 10:34

We’ve been three times for a week in the past ten years, includes a week in Cyprus that my dad paid for.

We’ve also had three weekends in Haven. Clearly not on the same level as most MN.

BrazenHusky74 · 18/06/2019 10:36

In 2004, 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2015. Each time for 10-14 days.

Also having a holiday this year, but DS1(16) isn't coming with us.

reluctantbrit · 18/06/2019 10:42

In general twice a year, normally one big 2 week one and then 5-7 days either May or October half term.

We have the odd overnight break like going to Longleat this year and it is too far to do both trips on one day.

We have family in Germany and while we visit I DO NOT count this as holiday.

AuditAngel · 18/06/2019 10:48

We normally have a 2 week holiday in the summer, and try for another long weekend or week during half term or Easter.

Greggers2017 · 18/06/2019 10:49

We usually do a haven week at Easter.
Eurocamp for a week in May half term.
A couple of camping weeks in August.
A week abroad at October half term.
We love bargains though so fly Ryanair and stay in basic accommodation.

BiddyPop · 18/06/2019 11:03

1 family holiday in summer
Maybe 5/6 trips to see family for the weekend (used to be monthly, life too busy) - a break from home but definitely not a holiday!
Maybe 4/5 sports events for DD competing (some we both go, some just 1 of us) - not really a holiday either

We used to manage a weekend away abroad most years, too busy nowadays
DD and I both have commitments most weekends in term time, and she has a lot of events in summer.

Knockout · 18/06/2019 11:11

We quite often go for a long weekend to visit friends or family who live abroad. So far this year they have been to Bristol, Brighton (a lot!), Belgium (three times) and Holland (one bank holiday weekend) but I wouldn't class any of them as actual proper holidays.

This summer we're camping with friends for a few days (once again I wouldn't count this as a holiday, it's more catching up with friends at a half way point) and we're having 10 days in Spain.

So all together I'd count it as 1 holiday plus loads of visits to friends and family.

theorchidwhisperer · 18/06/2019 11:15

As a family we do a luxury CP with private spa in the winter months for a mid week.

We try and do a week away during summer holidays, usually UK based.

We also have many short breaks to Europe but without the children as x6 in the holidays is so expensive.

Paultrybudget · 18/06/2019 11:19

4 x 1 week holidays, two in uk, two abroad.

Perhaps one or two weekends away a year.

DS just turned 3.

BlackeyedGruesome · 18/06/2019 11:25

once per year.

soulrunner · 18/06/2019 11:52

School aged dc. Normally do 2 "proper" holidays a year for a week to 10 days. However, we live overseas so we also go back to UK every summer which is either a holiday or not a holiday depending on how you view it (the kids would say yes I think as they love seeing cousins/gps and going to UK attractions/ country parks etc). I'd view it as "a change not a rest". Then maybe a few weekends away visiting friends or for sports competitions. There's nowhere to drive from where we live annoyingly so everything is plane.

ShanghaiDiva · 18/06/2019 11:56

About nine or ten times per year. We live in China and can get some good deals on flights and don't plan to travel to the far east once we move back to the UK.

BlackInk · 18/06/2019 11:58

Week, my poor children...

We have one proper holiday a year, which is usually a week's camping in the UK during the summer holidays.

Apart from that, just the odd weekend / night away with friends or family.

I have no idea how normal people have the time or money for multiple holidays! DP and I work full time in reasonably well-paid jobs too.

BlackInk · 18/06/2019 11:59

Eeek, not week :)

paranoiamumma · 18/06/2019 12:01

We go away every year but this year is a UK based holiday , next year is Egypt ,
We have varying aged children from 5-23 the older ones obviously earn and pay for them selves .

implantsandaDyson · 18/06/2019 12:04

Once a year we rent a house in a popular seaside town for a week - its about 90 min drive so no real travel expenses and its mates rates for house.

Every other year we head away somewhere for a week at the end of June/beginning of July (Spain, Portugal, Balearics, Netherlands). We don't do weekends away as a family but my husband and I get away for a few days once a year - wherever is cheap flight wise.

anothernotherone · 18/06/2019 12:05

BlackInk I think a lot of people do more improvised holidays/ trips.

We don't have a set routine but take the kids away at least twice per year, sometimes a few shorter trips too, or a trip with one child for a specific reason. It's not some all inclusive resort or package though, we often drive or take a train and use youth hostels or other fairly cheap accommodation.

blackteaplease · 18/06/2019 12:05

2/3 weeks camping in Europe in the summer (depending on finances and my annual leave)
3 nights camping in west country over may half term
