How often do you take your children in holiday? Including weekends?

Up to DS1 becoming 16took the boys away every half term ( excluding Christmas) and 10 days in the summer holidays.
It was always a set theme, one week skiing, one week in Spain, one week in France and a week in a European city and surrounding towns and also using inter rail and go where ever we felt like.
We went away as many weekends as possible, usually to Scotland for him and mountain walking or climbing.

We didn't have loads of money but used hostels, camped in good weather, had some great adventures wild camping.

DS1 started going abroad with his mates family at 16 and it was like we lost a limb without him. However by the time he was 19 he re-joined us on outings and trips.

2 x 1 week a year, both in the UK as DS is 3 and is more than happy with a British seaside holiday. We have family in Devon, West Wales and Norfolk so do long weekends there too but don't view that as holidays just visiting family.

Branleuse · 18/06/2019 12:10

usually twice a year for a proper holiday. We go to france for a long holiday every summer, and I also like to try and take them away in the february half term or easter too. Often I will take one child for one of these, and the other two for the others, as going all together can be challenging to manage, and then we try our best to all get along for the summer, but often my mum takes one for a while then we swap to another.
Often will also take the kids away to visit grandparents but im not sure thats a holiday. More of a duty.

I would go away every holiday if I could. Its always on the cheap though

anothernotherone · 18/06/2019 12:12

I think the UK is a very expensive place to holiday, so those thinking they're holidaying in a shoe string by staying in the UK are probably not actually saving much compared to some European options.

We are tied to school holidays but tend to holiday at Easter, June or October, which is always cheaper than August.

Sweetooth92 · 18/06/2019 12:19

We tend to have one “main” holiday a year. This year we are going to the Dominican for a fortnight, last year was Disneyland Paris, year before turkey. So it does vary. We also take our scout group for a week in the school summer holiday, Wales this year, and tend to have 1-2 Monday to Friday CP type breaks. If we counted all the weekends we take the beavers/cubs/scouts sometimes we are away 50:50 over weekends in the milder months but I wouldn’t class that as a holiday. Just about count the week in the summer as that’s with our older ones at 14-18 but it’s bloody hard work still! But we pay for our places to keep costs down for the parents so it’s not a cheap use of a weeks leave. I fully expect this to change once we are tied to term time only breaks so we are making the most of it for now.

notacooldad · 18/06/2019 12:24

I agree about the UK being expensive and there are a lot of cheaper options.
I said in my post that we went away virtually every half term. However it was done on a budget. I would fly out on the cheapest day and come back at the best time. So I may have flown out on a Friday after school but come back a week on Sunday, we would stay in family rooms in hostels or camp in France, the weather was always good for the fifteen consecutive years we went. We went to countries that were off the beaten track and had some amazing expierences.
The kids friends often went to Disneyland and the like but we couldn't afford that, well we could but it would mean only one holiday and I liked to have lots of breaks and made the money go further by travelling East!!
I still love going back to those places now!

CassianAndor · 18/06/2019 12:28

wow.

school aged DC. One week's holiday (UK) in the summer. Odd weekends to visit MIL.

I take it all these multiple holidayers do not consist of 2 full time working parents with school-aged children.

juneau · 18/06/2019 12:28

4-5 times, although length and locations vary. Probably one city break long weekend, a week skiing, a week in the summer and a week in Oct half-term. If we go and see the ILs (outside Europe), we go for anything from a 7-12 days. We never take a 2-week holiday - DH and I get bored staying in one place for too long.

Chocolate35 · 18/06/2019 12:32

Wow! Me and DH both work and can usually stretch to one abroad holiday a year. No breaks away in between and some years we don’t go away. High rent and low-ish salaries make it impossible to do more.

Winebottle · 18/06/2019 12:41

It varies each year but we go abroad every summer for a week.

We have family in Asia so usually visited them every year at some point.

We went away in January this year and I would like to do that regularly but annual leave is not long enough.

We only have one toddler so it doesn't tend to be expensive yet.

DrCoconut · 18/06/2019 12:41

I try to book a travelodge or something a couple of times a year. We tag it onto a day out so it's quite exciting for the DC. We did a haven break from the paper at Easter but the summer ones are no good for school age children (unless you live where holidays are not late July and August) as they are all June and early July or September. I'd love to be able to go on a "proper" holiday but can't justify the cost at the moment.

CassianAndor · 18/06/2019 12:43

Chocolate for us it's trying to divide 13 weeks of school holidays by 10 weeks (between us) annual leave. Every week we both take off together is another week for DD in holiday clubs.

Sowhataboutthat · 18/06/2019 12:52

Wow thanks all. Most people seem to go away a lot then!

Yes I was, and still am a full time worker. The kids went on holiday from Ds1 being 2 years old until 15 and Ds 2 being 6months ( and still occasionally comes with us at 19), so yes, they went although the school years on holiday with me and DP.
Why not?

TeapotofTerror · 18/06/2019 12:53

Wow! Some of you are very lucky!

We usually have a few days in a seaside caravan in the uk every year. So far DC is content but it won't last.

wendz86 · 18/06/2019 12:53

1-2 times a year and they usually go with their dad once a year. Mine aren't always abroad.

museumum · 18/06/2019 12:57

we have a campervan. we use it for a week in the summer and probably four or five weekends (we're too far north to use it october to april).
we also ski abroad most years for a week.

CassianAndor · 18/06/2019 12:58

notacooldad because of divvying up annual leave with school holidays.

Every time DH and I take a week off together our annual leave drops by 2 weeks.

DD would be in holiday clubs an awful lot if we did that throughout the year.

I think you are talking about lots of weekend breaks but others are saying several 'proper' holidays a year.

Titsywoo · 18/06/2019 13:00

One 3 day camping trip and one week somewhere like Centre Parcs or abroad in the summer. This year we also did a 4 night driving holiday in France and I'd like to keep doing that regularly too.

imamearcat · 18/06/2019 13:05

This year we've done:
4 days in Tenerife
Long weekend in Whitby
Week in lanzorote
Week IOW
10 days in France coming up next month.

Feeling a bit holiday'd out! Might do a long haul in the winter. Kids 2 and 3.

Lipz · 18/06/2019 13:07

We got to Florida for 2 weeks every year. We do 3-5 days visits in hotels to family in London, Manchester and Scotland (we're in Ireland). Depending on what's on each year we could do a week end or two here in Ireland.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 18/06/2019 13:08

Children are 1 and 4. We do 2 x long weekend breaks in a hotel per year, sometimes more if there are exhibitions/things we're interested in. We do 2 weeks in summer and then quite a few weekends away camping. Plus we visit dh's sister for an early Christmas/go around her local christmas market for another long weekend every December.

It's mostly all in the UK at the moment as I hate beach holidays and flying with children.

notacooldad · 18/06/2019 13:13

CassianAndor
notacooldad because of divvying up annual leave with school holidays I still dont get what you are saying. I could take my leave anytime. So I'm not sure why you think I couldnt be a full time parent and do these holidays.

I think you are talking about lots of weekend breaks but others are saying several 'proper' holidays a year You think wrong then. you haven't read my post or if you have you haven't understood it. I said I went away every half term except Christmas. Half term including weekends are 9 days. That's clearly not a weekend break. I said we had weekend breaks. This is additional to our holidays. I would have everything packed Thursday night, the kids would come home from school Friday and get changed and we would be off soon after.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/06/2019 13:14

This year...
Week skiing in January
Visited my parents in London twice for a week
Scout camp for weekend in Belgium
Kids will stay with Grandparents in Yorkshire for a week in Summer,
Another London trip

Moving back to the UK in Summer so weekends with Grandparents will start again, not just week long trips

We may fit in a camping holiday in August after our move.

avalanching · 18/06/2019 13:19

Holiday abroad once a year, DH and I go abroad alone once a year, as for weekends I'm not sure, 2-3? Depends on the year I guess, this year will be about 3, and my parents are taking them on holiday for a week (UK) too.
