Ripped off by builder - advice needed

To cut a long story short we’ve been ripped off by an incompetent roofer (to the tune of 10k). Money we haven’t got and this loss will really impact us in terms of house renovations and life in general. I’m going to report him to trading standards and take the small claims process but need the roofers’ address and currently only have his name, mobile number, bank details and area he lives in. I’ve done lots of googling and checked companies house register but can’t find evidence of his existence. Does anyone know how I could get his address, in order to report him and try to prevent this happening to others?

Have you looked on social media?

DontCallMeShitley · 17/06/2019 00:24

How did you find him?

Do you want me to try to find out? PM me his name and area you are in if you do.

ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/vatResponse.html

If you have his VAT number, search it on here

listsandbudgets · 17/06/2019 06:46

You could try 192.com. If you get someone you think maybe him youd need to pay for full address.

Is it a common name or.something a bit more unusual?

youaremysunshine2623 · 17/06/2019 07:52

Thank you all - appreciate the replies. Yes, have searched social media, no luck. Don’t have VAT number, have tried 192.com and there are 82 of that name in his city. I will try again to see if there is a way of narrowing down the search. It seemed that you needed to pay £15 to access each ‘name’ which seems extortionate.
We found him via a friend, he was recommended, and the mutual friend says they don’t have his address. I don’t know if he’s trying to cover for him or not as we have sent pictures of his ‘work’ which are fairly self explanatory. It’s a different area to us ( we’re in South Wales, he is in Bristol).

Do you know the first half of his postcode or could you work it out from the area he lives in ? 192 will search on that which might narrow it down

Is it really £15. I'm sure when I've used it in the past, its been considerably less

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 17/06/2019 18:48

Im a dab hand at finding people. Once found a mobile phone in the street that was locked. However i managed to locate the owners wife and place of work and through that tracked the owner down.

PM me of you want help.

Doriana · 17/06/2019 18:58

Post on local Facebook/Nextdoor. You may. turn up some others who are unhappy with his work too.

youaremysunshine2623 · 17/06/2019 21:39

Hiya all thanks so much for replying. Yes have tried local FB but no luck. Have one lead on 192 thanks to a lovely mumsnetter who has been helping me and it links to the first half of the post code for the area we know he lives in. If that fails I’ll be in touch TherealhousewifeofCheshire- thanks. Xx

License plate of his works van might help track him?

AJPTaylor · 18/06/2019 07:10

If you can find his address and have home insurance please check if you have legal cover. It can be very helpful.

wowfudge · 18/06/2019 07:13

Is there someone you know who could contact him for a quote and get him chatting, narrow things down a bit? If you can get his van registration then providing it's over three years old you'll be able to check where it's been MOT'd which could help.
