The Flower Girls

I have just read the flower girls by Alice Clark- platts and I thought it was a great read until the end. However, There are so many unanswered questions. Can anyone offer some insight or their interpretation of it?

It's such a shame. Was all going great and then just a bizarre open ended ending that made absolutely no sense🙈
