Definitely has a d in it and both o and a are accptable in common use - or that is how I rememebr it.

MrsElizabeth - your friends are heathens and snobs. I bet I know how they pronounce Breage (Cornwall) too Smile

NationalAnthem · 16/06/2019 16:31

Dh's family still live there - job prospects seem poor. For those of you interested in the economic health of Norwich - look here--->>

Gressenhall = Grezznal

justaweeone · 16/06/2019 19:05

Norwich is fab
I studied here, left for a few years, came back to work here and then got married. We then moved to Buckinghamshire for 7 years but have been back in Norfolk for 14 years. We knew that we want to bring the children up here and live in a village in Breckland. Although my favourite place when living in Norwich was the 'Golden Triangle' and plan to live there in the next 5 years when the children have flown the nest!
I work in Norwich but my Dh works from home and travels to various places for work.
It's a lovely place to live!
Good luck

curiousaboutsamphire how odd for you to insult my friends!

It's me that can't pronounce it! IV always been too embarrassed to ask!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/06/2019 19:18

MrsElizabeth Equally odd for you not to recognise humour, even when it has a big smiley face on it! Smile

Another hint: heathens woudn't be the right word would it?

But never mind. Twas an amusement that backfired. My apologies.

avalanching · 16/06/2019 19:18

I live in East Anglia, worked in Norwich, and say Nor-rich. But I'm not from here originally, not really noticed how it was said before, they sound kind of the same said quickly!

RubberTreePlant · 16/06/2019 19:21

Thanks @justaweeone Smile

The pronunciations around here are so bizarre, Wisbech anyone?! Ely? It's a mind field when you're not local.

TheRedBarrows · 16/06/2019 19:39

Stiffkey, the village = “Traffic jam” if the Hopper is coming through
Stiffkey the cockles = Stookey Blues

KindergartenKop · 16/06/2019 20:47

I am not from there and say Norrich. DH is from there and says Norridge. I cannot, though.

bloodywhitecat · 16/06/2019 20:50

Try Hoxne, not many know how to say that one.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 16/06/2019 20:52

Wisbech - whizz beach
Ely - Eee Lee (the Isle of Eels)

BlamesFartsOnTheNeighbour · 17/06/2019 06:58

willowstar · 17/06/2019 13:23

I think this settles it...an old English nursery rhyme :-)

THE man in the moon,
Came tumbling down,
And ask'd his way to Norwich,
He went by the south,
And burnt his mouth
With supping cold pease-porridge.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 17/06/2019 13:42

Tacolneston, Tasburgh, Cley. Go on, I dare you.

I lived in Naaaarrrtch for 5 happy years.

XXVaginaAndAUterus · 17/06/2019 13:49

NAAA-rch for the broad Norfolk accented, Nor-itch for me. You'll pass through FetFud on your way, that's my old town say hi to it for me!

S0CKS · 17/06/2019 13:49

More Norritch here too

hugoagogo · 17/06/2019 13:55

Much as I love Keith Skipper he don't half talk a lot of squit sometimes.
The list of place name pronunciations on that website are very much to be taken with a large pinch of salt.

TheRedBarrows · 17/06/2019 17:18

Hmm, not sure about the Norfolk dialect link - most people who live there pronounce Cley as Cly, not Clay.

Hence the birdwatcher's binocular shop : Cley Spy.
Doesn't work if it is pronounced Clay.

RubberTreePlant · 17/06/2019 17:41

There's a "birdwatchers' binocular shop"!?
