I literally say Nore-Witch. But I’m foreign - am I excused?

thefemaleJoshLyman · 16/06/2019 08:57

Love Norfolk places, my GCSE students have their minds blown by Happisburgh and Stiffkey...

ShowOfHands · 16/06/2019 09:03

I lived there for 6 years, including in Postwick for 2 years. I'm in West/mid Norfolk now.

Postwick = pozzick
Happisburgh = hays bruh
Wymondham = windum
Costessey = cossy
Stiffkey = stookey
Hunstanton = hunstun

ShowOfHands · 16/06/2019 09:04

I think you'll get away with many pronunciations of Norwich. No two people seem to say it the same. It's a lovely place. Where are you moving to?

smallereveryday · 16/06/2019 09:06

Don't care how it's pronounced but can I just say what a beautiful city it is. DH works there a few days a week so I took some days off work and spend 2days wandering around absolutely lovely, bijou-City with everything in walking distance . Followed by a day to myself on the broads/seal watching on the coast. Highly recommended.

”Nor-rich as there is no D in in...”

Why don’t you pronounce the W then?

Welcome to the English language where the collection of letters you have in front of you frequently have only a fleeting phonetic relationship (if any at all) with how the word is pronounced.

MustardScreams · 16/06/2019 09:11

No one that lives in North Norfolk calls Stiffkey Stookey. Just the cockles. The other ones are right though.

CanBlondesWearMustard · 16/06/2019 09:14

Alan Partridge says Nor- itch so I think your probably both wrong Grin

LadySainsburySeal · 16/06/2019 09:18

Norridge (like porridge).

insancerre · 16/06/2019 09:20

It’s norridge
To rhyme with porridge
Brought up in Norfolk but not born there

BringOnTheScience · 16/06/2019 09:20

Hautbois is Hobbiss
There's a gorgeous house & activity centre there owned by Girlguiding.

insancerre · 16/06/2019 09:23

I remember being stopped by Americans who asked the way to Why mond ham
😂

hugoagogo · 16/06/2019 09:30

'Up the city'
Or porridge

I grew up not far from Hautbois and we always said it ho-bus.

Not sure how much truth there is about the Stiffkey/ Stewkey thing, I never heard anyone local say it anything but Stiffkey!?

KnittingForMittens · 16/06/2019 11:35

I pronounce it Nor-Rish

theneverendinglaundry · 16/06/2019 12:50

I used to pronounce Norwich 'norritch' when I lived there, but these days I pronounce it 'the end of ambition'.

MustardScreams · 16/06/2019 14:42

@theneverendinglaundry unnecessary? Norwich is what you make it, clearly you weren’t right for it.

Kaykay06 · 16/06/2019 14:45

I say Norwich but my dad whose from London (folks live there) says nor ige
No d sound I don’t think
Mum says Norwich too, we Scottish though
Think it depends on your accent but it’s the same place regardless really

RubberTreePlant · 16/06/2019 15:10

Postwick = pozzick
Happisburgh = hays bruh
Wymondham = windum
Costessey = cossy
Stiffkey = stookey
Hunstanton = hunstun

Thanks. I'm taking notes Smile

@mustardscreams I guess you're right, we wanted to make it work but there is almost 0 there in terms of career prospects.

RubberTreePlant · 16/06/2019 15:17

It's a lovely place. Where are you moving to?

No idea!

I think, given the suddenness & timescales, the plan will have to be to rent a centralish flat, put the rest of our stuff in storage, and then look to buy once we have our bearings (and Brexit is settled).

MrsElizabethShelby · 16/06/2019 15:17

I always sat NOR-Wich Blush

I'm from the Midlands.

I have friends who live in Cost-essy and they used to live in De-reHAM

Are both these also wrong?

RubberTreePlant · 16/06/2019 15:21

I literally say Nore-Witch. But I’m foreign - am I excused?

It seems like most people need to be excused as far as Norfolk pronunciations go Grin

Dereham = deer um

Norwich is a fab city. Quaint in places, great food and culture, friendly, historically fascinating. I don't really understand the zero career prospects reference tbh. My friends and I seem to manage quite well!

ShowOfHands · 16/06/2019 15:39

(actually, we call it drear um but that's because we occasionally attend dull work training there)
