Ideas for 40th birthday present for DH?

DH has his 40th birthday coming up over summer and I’d love to buy him something special, but I’m completely stuck! Any good ideas out there?

He has just found out his work rota and he’ll be back in the country late on his birthday (a Friday), meaning he is free over the weekend. BUT it is too late notice for his friends, who nearly all have things booked. (DH has just changed jobs and can’t actually book leave until winter, so we were waiting on his roster). Initially we were thinking of getting somewhere to stay and hosting a small group, but that is now out.

We are moving house, probably around the same time. We booked awesome gig tickets hoping to be free on the right day, but we know know he will be away 🤦‍♀️.

DH is very particular and very good at saving. And has expensive taste! He’s into cycling, but has many bikes and doesn’t need more. He likes a good sound system and has various travel speakers. He has an expensive watch but isn’t really into them. He isn’t interested in fancy luggage despite travelling every week. He likes the outdoors, good beer, is pretty uninterested in clothes (except kit). He doesn’t wear jewellery.

He is an amazing guy and father but is pretty much uninterested in stuff - except where he is interested and then he has very specific opinions about things. He’s a hard chap to buy for!

Now I know he is free on the day after his birthday, I would like to take him out for a fancy dinner, but I’d also like to mark the moment with something special. I’d be hugely grateful for ideas! Budget up to maybe £300, I think.

PS I already feel terrible for not having good ideas and I am having a tough time with other things, so please be assured I have been thinking about this for months before turning to MN!

Thanks all! JoJo a personalised tool is an interesting idea... I am a bit afraid because he has very specific tool thoughts (and a lot of tools!) but presumably I can’t go too far wrong with crank tools... those other ideas are lovely too! He doesn’t have a local bike shop (knows what he likes to order online though).

It seems I am rubbish at online shopping Hmm - I usually book direct!

I got DH an outdoor table tennis table which has had lots of use.

Also got a tattoo of his nickname in a heart without telling him. Wouldn't work for everyone but he was so chuffed! (I'm not tattooed at all and won't have any more!)

What about going to watch a stage of the Tour de France/ giro/vuelta espana? Cheap European flights and hotel?

Some companies organise that you can cycle a stage of the grand tours the day before the actual race.....

Whatever you get, if it's a voucher (especially an independent store) make sure he hot-foots it to the store within a couple of weeks and spends the money otherwise if the company goes bust, you lose the lot.

Vouchers are the lowest in the pecking order when a company goes down! The best thing to do is give him a cheque in a nice card, or better still get the DC to make the card so it's special.

How about a flying lesson then lunch / dinner near the airfield?

For DHs last big birthday he needed nothing. I wanted something for him to remember not more stuff.

Cheers piefaced and Ed. He’s done trips to cycle Le Tour and the Vuelta routes before (and loved them) but his job makes booking things like that very risky! And Ed - great suggestion but he is a qualified pilot and glider pilot so it would be like a day at work Wink. I suggested hot air balloon last year (thinking he might want to see our local area from nearer to the ground) but he seemed unbothered!
