12 weeks - brown spotting

Hi,

I am 12 weeks tomorrow and tonight I have had brown spotting just a tiny amount in my underwear and on the toilet paper. We had a scan Monday just gone baby was doing well moving about & heart was beating well.

We suffered an early loss at 5 weeks in 2017 so my anxiety has been sky high since finding out and has involved multiple toilet paper checking! This the first spotting I have had and not sure if I am just worrying over nothing.

Unfortunately, the only way to check for wellbeing would be another scan, or a Doppler, but no midwife will perform the latter on you at 12 weeks. Some places have you under EPU until 13+6 so maybe worth a call there, or possibly daybed and ask to be referred for a scan. I hope there’s nothing wrong and it’s just one of those things. I bled in both my pregnancies and it is surprisingly common, especially when there’s a lot of stretching going on, and at 12 weeks your uterus is starting to rise out of the pelvis and go through rapid size increase. Risks of a loss once you’ve seen a heartbeat decrease dramatically, so fingers crossed for all being well. Good luck.

Hi OP, I don't have answers for you I'm afraid but here for a hand hold. You could see if the EPU can scan you again on Monday. Sometimes they will for bleeding - especially if you have had a previous loss.

First of all try and relax, I know thats easier said than done.

The chances of something awful happening after a heartbeat is seen at over 10 weeks is minuscule. I bled after bowel movements and was told that because there’s more blood in the cervix and that area in general when you’re pregnant that sometimes you do get spotting.

Get checked out for your own peace of mind. I wish you well x

This happened to me at 11 weeks so I rang the hospital who advised to go in to A&E and they sent me up to the ward. I was then told to come back 3 days later for an transvaginal scan to check.

Luckily everything was fine and I have a haematoma on the outside of where the placenta is growing and the nurse just thinks because the baby is weighing around, the clot has been knocked.

I'm back for my 12 week scan on Monday (at 13 weeks) and I've had more of the same tonight (but nothing since the last time) so I'm not too worried.

I would definitely advise getting in touch with your midwife or hospital, just to put your mind at rest. Thanks

I had this at 6 weeks and it turned out it was a haematoma but baby was absolutely fine I just needed to rest.

If you are worried please call midwife but it is very common to spot.

How are you OP?

Hi all,

Sorry for the delay in replying to all your messages I got a new phone yesterday and only just reinstalled everything on it so hadn't seen everyone's replies.

Thank you to you all for commenting the brown spotting/discharge finished by midday yesterday and had no pains or anything with it so think it may have just been some old blood and got myself into a bit of a state. If it starts again I will contact my midwife just for reassurance on what's best to do xx
