Why does orange juice suddenly taste off?

For the past few weeks, every time I've drunk fresh orange juice it tastes really strange. The best I can describe it is that it tastes almost like I imagine rotten eggs would, kind of sulphuric.
I thought it was something to do with my fridge as the taste gets worse the longer the carton is open, but I've also noticed this weird taste (although not nearly so bad) in juice I've had in cafes and this morning I had a small bottle of Tropicana straight from the shop and there was a definite tang. Confused
Any ideas? Zero chance I'm pregnant. It's just baffling me and I want to know if there's anything I can do before I give up fresh orange juice for good!

Are you drinking it straight after brushing your teeth?

justasking111 · 14/06/2019 22:19

Have you had flu or a bad cold lately?

MightyAtlantic · 14/06/2019 22:20

Not always, no.

No flu or colds either.

sinus problems, hay fever?

Fantababy · 14/06/2019 22:24

Was going to say pregnant.

SaucySausageSandwiches · 14/06/2019 22:25

Aspartame? The taste of that makes me feel sick and loads of drinks now have it in it.

Casmama · 14/06/2019 22:26

Pregnant? Gum disease or something maybe

MightyAtlantic · 14/06/2019 22:29

justasking could be a sinus issue I suppose, although I haven't noticed any symptoms recently and when my sinuses are bad I usually know about it! But maybe related right enough.

Saucy Would fresh juice have that in it? I usually avoid no added sugar squashes etc like the plague.

Some viruses do weird things to your taste buds for a time. I only found out by googling. We have all had flu and discovered afterwards we all were having trouble eating and drinking the odd thing. It is interesting when you look into it.

Probably the preservative.

MightyAtlantic · 14/06/2019 22:31

Definitely, definitely not pregnant!
Maybe I should go to the dentist for a check up.
Anyway, thanks everyone for the suggestions, hadn't thought of most of these.

Thanks justasking that is a very interesting article. Without going into the gory details, I have had some stomach problems recently but it never occurred to me that the two things might be related!

Have you eaten loads of pine nuts recently? They always affect my taste afterwards.

justasking111 · 14/06/2019 22:36

I have a hiatus hernia and gerd. Orange juice is my nemesis.

combatbarbie · 14/06/2019 22:45

I have sleeping tablets that makes all liquid tastes foul, I had a close encounter the first time i drank milk and it honestly tasted like the curdled making cheese taste......

Graphista · 15/06/2019 06:26

Definitely not pregnant as in it would be a biblical miracle or definitely not as in using contraception but having hetero sex? Because the last thread like this I posted on the op was adamant they weren't pregnant, eventually took a test (to prove us wrong I suspect)..:pregnant!

But...if biblical miracle territory:

Various respiratory viruses as has been mentioned can affect taste but also oral thrush, dental infection, salivary gland infections, stomach infections/conditions, hormonal imbalances...

I think it unlikely an ingredient/storage issue as you say you've tried juice in different brands and storage set ups.

LaCerbiatta · 15/06/2019 06:30

Orange juice tastes like rotten eggs to me too!!! Definitely not pregnant and no sinuses problems. It must be some additive. I'm drinking freshly squeezed right now, as in not from a bottle, and there's no taste.

I feel so happy I'm not the only one though!!! My husband thinks I'm crazy!

justasking111 · 17/06/2019 13:54

How are you doing OP?

MightyAtlantic · 17/06/2019 22:49

I'm fine thanks justasking111, but I've decided to cut out orange juice completely for a while.

Graphista, if I do turn out to be pregnant there will definitely be three kings calling round with gifts in a few months' time. Grin

Just found this thread after a google search for why does orange juice taste so gross 😂 One week it’s fine and then all of a sudden it tastes disgusting again. Like gone off egg. Also not pregnant, although trying I’ve just come off my period and tested before then so definitely not! It happened a few months ago and I tried different brands etc and then stopped drinking orange juice as it all tasted awful and now it’s happening again. Anyone else?!?! Husband thinks it tastes fine and think I’m going crazy!

Asparagusluvva · 09/03/2021 18:37

@mummamwl Glad I found this thread again. Can I ask when you first noticed this sulphuric taste ? I only noticed mine last March. Then it returned again to a far lesser extent in May/ June . And now just a faint trace of it when I eat a fresh orange , usually a sharp tasting one.

I do wonder if could be connected to Covid in some way , not that I was ever tested last February/ March and only suffered with a very very mild dry cough.
