UK weekend away

Any recommendations for a weekend break in the UK, for the August bank holiday? I'm in the SE currently but am also familiar with the SW so would rather not somewhere there. Open to absolutely anything!

How long are you willing to spend travelling?

Are you trying to get away from the crowds, or are you happy to be in a throng?

What sorts of things do you like doing?

Some ideas which spring to mind are:

Channel Islands
Norfolk Broads
Bamburgh
Rutland Water

We live near an airport so I'd say anywhere from a 6 hour drive to a few hours flight. Really not fussy tbh! Not very helpful I know, but I'm not yet decided if I fancy a city break or something a bit more rural. Thought I'd look at all suggestions before making a decision

What about York? A gorgeous old city with plenty of nice hotels and restaurants, lots of things to see and do plus the Yorkshire Dales nearby if you want to get out into beautiful countryside.

Other good city breaks we've enjoyed are Bath and Bakewell (small, sweet town with beautiful Derbyshire around it and the likes of Chatsworth nearby).
