Please, please can anyone point me in the direction of a really good, but idiot proof Lentil Dahl recipe please? Everytime I make it something goes wrong and I absolutely love Dahl, it makes such a great cheap tea!

TIA Smile

I use this one from Jack Monroe - cookingonabootstrap.com/2018/09/20/lentil-spinach-daal-recipe/

This one every time. Takes hours and you must whisk it at the end but it's beautiful. www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2011/jun/02/how-to-cook-perfect-dal

Fry 2 onions, 4 cloves of garlic and a dessertspoon of grated ginger.
Add a rounded dessertspoon of Garamond masala (supermarket is fine) and chilli flakes to taste fry the spices for a few minutes or they will taste a bit raw
Add a tin of coconut milk and a tin of chopped tomatoes.
1/2 packet of red lentils, water and salt.
I make quite a thick Dahl and either peel potatoes and cook them in the Dahl or serve with rice. Add a bale of chopped coriander towards the end of cooking (about 1/2 hour simmer)
Freezes well

My dd made a lentil Dahl at school that's been very popular here.

Fry half an onion and some garlic in oil
Add teaspoon of curry powder and pinch of salt
Add lentils and enough water to cover them
Bring to the boil bad then simmer for 20 mins or so (long enough for the lentils to go a bit mushy.)

What type of dhal do you use?

I learnt to make this thin Dahl in India:
Fry in small amount mustard oil: chopped onion, chilli flakes or a whole red chilli, a few garlic cloves, pinch of cumin, pinch of turmeric and pinch black pepper. After a few minutes add red lentils and fry. Add tinned chopped Toms, water. Once lentils are soft (20mins approx) add salt and a couple of whole bay leaves. After 5 more mins whisk the Dahl with a Dahl whisk or balloon whisk to break up the lentils. Serve with a wedge of lemon.

Meera Sodha's daily dal is hard to beat.

This is simple and delicious

Put one onion, a head of garlic, 3/4 teaspoon turmeric, teaspoon salt, chilli, mug red lentils, cover with water and simmer until thick (no need to pre fry just throw everything in). When it’s the right consistency, take a frying pan, pour a generous amount of olive oil in, heat, throw 2 teaspoons cumin seeds in, when they’ve browned throw them and the oil into the Dahl and mix. Delicious and simple
