Inspired by another thread. Have £100 worth of points. Want to spend it on something other than petrol!

So could I use mine to say buy 120 food processor?

What a brilliant idea to buy Kitchen utensils!

TooMuch87 · 12/06/2019 19:29

I save mine for the Double Up. Last time around I bought a new suitcase, hair dryer, printer ink, headphones and a few other bits.

I try to keep about £500 in my Nectar account though. I like to think if I'm ever in dire financial trouble I'll still be able to cover my food shop for a year or so!

I never heard of double up b4 this thread.
How do you know when double up periods are?
I always spend our points as soon as I can (in Sainsbury's own store).
I suppose it might be On avg about £2.50/week off regular groceries.

TheCanyon · 12/06/2019 20:45

We use them for Christmas/New Years booze.

Omg I didn't know about Sainsburys double up days! When do they happen? Can you only do this for products bought in Sainsburys?

How do you get nectar points on train tickets @NoodlingAlong ?

@Lifebuoy 😱👍

Christmas food shop. Although Sainsburys is the supermarket we go to most often (occasional shops at Lidl and the Co-Op and Ocado) we never seem to accrue more than about £60/£70 worth of points in a whole year. We probably spend £150 a week in Sainsbs.

bordellosboheme · 12/06/2019 21:00

I've missed a trick here. I didn't realise so many brands offer nectar points. I don't suppose you can claim them retrospectively??

Longcroft20041987 · 12/06/2019 21:00

You can spend them in argos. I’m saving mine for Christmas. Try the new nectar app I absolutely love it new offers from things you regularly buy every friday. I get extra 80 points just for the coffee i buy.

Longcroft20041987 · 12/06/2019 21:03

Try going in store to buy the large or more expensive item and having it home delivered if that’s what you are after. I collect and spend nectar throughout ebay so you would think thrre should be a way on the website

Oblomov19 · 12/06/2019 21:04

Save mine all year for my huge Christmas shop.

NoodlingAlong · 12/06/2019 21:05

I don’t think the double up thing is very well-advertised.

Basically there is a time period in November every year when you can take your nectar card to customer services in a Sainsbury’s. They tell you how many points you have and then can give you a voucher for double that amount to spend in store over another set time frame - also in November I think. I think they may also do the same thing around Easter time but I have only ever done it in the November one. It has to be rounded to the lowest 10 or maybe 5 I think? So for example if you had 22 pounds worth of points on your card you could use 20 of that in the double up and get a voucher for 40.

The voucher is also for a specific section. I always go for alcohol and it has to be spent on Sainsbury’s taste the difference range I think.

On the train ticket thing. I regularly buy tickets online with Great Western Railway to visit my parents. In the GWR online account it asks if you want to link your nectar card to your account so that you get points when you buy tickets. I used to have my card linked to my EDF energy account too but they stopped that which was a shame.

MerryDeath · 12/06/2019 21:11

i buy that sushi from the counter as a reward to myself for doing the fecking big shop every week

lljkk · 12/06/2019 21:16

If the doubled up points can only be spent on specific categories, that doesn't sound very useful to me. I don't want to spend hundreds in most possible categories.

A lot of criticism here. As a rule, I hate vouchers so this just confirms my prejudice.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 12/06/2019 21:19

We have virtually fitted out our house using nectar points, toaster, vacuum, bikes, chairs, iron, we collect loads and use them all the time
I love nectar points!

BarbaraofSevillle · 12/06/2019 21:55

There's usually a pre-warning of the double up in the MoneySavingExpert weekly newsletter. Probably posters in store if you regularly shop there.

smartiecake · 13/06/2019 15:51

They have emailed me to tell me whrn double up is on and its usually over a long weekend in November

TravellingSpoon · 13/06/2019 16:00

Ebay.

I dont use them as much as I used to because of their links to the DM, but I still get them on ebay purchases so I probably get £10 a year from them.

crustycrab · 13/06/2019 16:14

The double up is great.

I'll have around £500 to spend this year. I'll get toys, books, games, wine, birthday cards for the year, new cushions, Xmas stuff, pyjamas, clothes. To the poster who said it has to be spent on categories so it's not that good. You're wrong, it's brilliant.

crustycrab · 13/06/2019 16:15

Can not understand anyone who wouldn't wait for double up Grin

HoustonBess · 13/06/2019 18:49

Nothing, I started to save the but you get tiny amounts in return for supermarkets compiling data about your every whim. I'd rather have my privacy.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 13/06/2019 18:55

I'm skint so was pleasantly surprised to discover I had £45 worth of points on my card. Boringly it went on shopping.

bordellosboheme · 13/06/2019 19:20

Can you tell me how to do nectar points please??

BackforGood · 13/06/2019 23:48

I don't know if it has changed in the last year or two, but when I've sen the double points thing advertised, there were limited categories you could spend them on - so not really saving if you weren't going to be buying them anyway.

Bordello - you just pick yourself up a card and scan it whenever you spend in Sainsburys (including petrol). The points just add up and continue to increase, unlike the cheating folk at the Works or Brewers Fayre who wipe you card clean if you don't spend them in their timescale, or Tesco who send you out vouchers which then run out of date if you don't spend them.

thatonesmine · 13/06/2019 23:52

I usually buy gift cards to spend elsewhere. Fat Face for example.
