Kendal or Lancaster?

My husband has a job offer in the area and we are thinking about relocating. We are looking for a 4 bedroom house with enough outside space for chickens. Ideally walking distance to a good primary school.

Can anyone recommend the sort of area we should be looking at, and the places we should avoid? Is there much to do? And does it rain as much as I fear?

I think Kendal was named as the nicest place to live in the UK a couple of years ago! Lancaster is a lovely town, too.

Kendal is expensive as it's just inside the boundary of the Lake District.

I guess it depends on what we think of both places when we visit then.
