Would you be willing to pay more for your TV licence to ensure it stays free for over 75s?

I blinking would.

Angry

I know it's be a administrative impossiblity to achieve, but volunteering to pay an extra £5/£10 per year? Could it work?

Helena you're sounding a little crazy now.

Your DM won't suddenly refuse private health care to get a TV Licence or vice versa.

Yes there will be some people on the borderline. As was ever thus.

If you get pension credit, then you get a TV licence, everyone else can pay.

There aren't many on the borderline who will struggle for £3 per week to pay it.

HelenaDove · 10/06/2019 21:01

@cptartapp Yes and i was disgusted with that and signed petitions against it.

Great to see the reciprocated support for pensioners Hmm

HelenaDove · 10/06/2019 21:04

Ok then i concede Now filing this one for when i next see a similar thread like the one i mentioned. Cant link as it was from the days when chat threads were 90 days.

Barnabyboy · 10/06/2019 21:04

I don’t know any wealthy pensioners. The ones I know are all struggling.

Teachermaths · 10/06/2019 21:06

The psychological impact of poverty will not mean you start saving like mad to pay a TV licence. I don't dispute the thread you are talking about (I read the same one).

A TV licence doesn't alter hugely in cost each year. People will have plenty of warning. It can be paid monthly by direct debit now too.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 10/06/2019 21:06

No! This generation of pensioners are the wealthiest yet and will probably be wealthier than the younger generations when they reach that age. Plus I think the whole idea of a TV license is absolute shite anyway and it's lucky DH pays it because I really wouldn't!

DPotter · 10/06/2019 21:07

No. many 75+ 'earn' more than I do.
Very happy for licence to be free for those on pension credits, but not a blanket approach

whitehalleve · 10/06/2019 21:08

I could afford to but no. Many over 75s are in the golden generation of home ownership and great pensions that some younger people can only dream of. It's these people who will now have to pay.

SpiderPlant38 · 10/06/2019 21:24

Ageism seems to be alive and well.

Yes there are some rich pensioners just as there are some rich people in their thirties.

If they were poor before they won't suddenly have got rich because they are older!
Just because "you" know rich over 75s does not mean that they are all rich.

moonrises · 10/06/2019 21:31

Well it is a bit rubbish for my Mum who is about to turn 75, but hey ho she won't miss what she never had.

I read on the BBC that this age group is the one that watches the most TV, so I am not sure it is right to ask a younger group to pay for them.

I think an important point has been raised about those in the 'middle' though, the one end will get it paid for, the other end have plenty of money so can easily afford it (if they want to is another issue) and then you have those in the middle that just about manage and this may mean a little more juggling.

As for growing up - we had a black and white television, it was much cheaper for the licence then a colour one.

lunar1 · 10/06/2019 21:36

No I wouldn't pay extra, but I don't agree with the tv tax in the first place!

Aquilla · 10/06/2019 21:37

No, but I believe the whole thing should be scrapped as the BBC no longer represent the country's views.

BeautifulWintersMorning · 10/06/2019 21:40

Just because "you" know rich over 75s does not mean that they are all rich.
No they aren't all rich but they are better off than working age people and much less likely to have children to support
www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-38957903
Those on pension credits will still get a free licence.

Surfskatefamily · 10/06/2019 21:43

No... all the over 75s i personally know hugely rich compared to me. I dont think that generation need hand outs.

Maybe an income based tv license would be fairer than age based

whitehalleve · 10/06/2019 21:50

It's hardly ageism putting older ppl in the same situation as others.

Feelingwalkedover · 10/06/2019 21:51

No
All the over 75 year olds I know take 3/4 holidays a year ,always New York for one of them.
Another has a jag
They are all mortgage free with plenty of money
I think they are the last lot of 75 year olds who will have this amount of disposable income
So maybe ask the question in another 15 years or so.

BackforGood · 10/06/2019 21:55

That's not ageism SpiderPlant.
That is people replying to a question posted by the OP - who seemed to suggest that everyone over 75 is automatically living in poverty because they are over 75.
Age has to be mentioned, because that was the suggestion from the OP. Virtually everyone has replied that isn't the case, in their experience. I don't think anyone has said all over 75s are rich, just that, proportionally, as a % of that cohort, quite a lot are.

Gooseysgirl · 10/06/2019 21:59

No way. My lovely 80 yr old MIL has always said that she's grateful for the free licence, winter fuel allowance etc but that she (and most of her mates) could afford to pay for it herself.

80sMum · 10/06/2019 22:00

No, I'm not sure I would want to pay towards freebies that are based purely on age alone. I've always found that to be discriminatory. If you think about it, it would effectively be penalising younger people just for being young.

Besides, all of the over-75s that I know are quite well off and paying for the TV licence wouldn't cause them any financial hardship whatsoever.

PotteringAlong · 10/06/2019 22:01

Nope. They can pay for their own, and if they can’t they will get it paid for anyway.

HotChocolateLover · 10/06/2019 22:06

I don’t think it should automatically be free for the over 75s. Same with bus passes. Should be means tested. So the answer to your question is, no, I wouldn’t be happy.

Awrite · 10/06/2019 22:08

No, I would scrap the BBC.

ThomasRichard · 10/06/2019 22:15

No. I’m a bit busy paying astronomical childcare fees and a mortgage and saving like crazy into a private pension so that I might not still have to work aged 75.

Free TV licences for all the over-75s was a nice-to-have. Unlike decent education, healthcare, roads, support for people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, etc. that aren’t being funded properly. If we don’t have money for essentials we certainly don’t have money for nice things.

Cuppycakes · 10/06/2019 22:16

it is still free for those on pension credit which is a good thing. But why should the rest of us be subsiding other people’s TV license? Much agree with PP’s that it should be a means tested benefit.

ThomasRichard · 10/06/2019 22:17

I don’t mind paying for free bus passes as a safety measure as much as anything else. It incentivises elderly drivers to give up driving before they start becoming more of a danger to themselves and other road users.
