Would you be willing to pay more for your TV licence to ensure it stays free for over 75s?

I blinking would.

Angry

I know it's be a administrative impossiblity to achieve, but volunteering to pay an extra £5/£10 per year? Could it work?

No, rather scrap the license fee entirely and get the BBC to use adverts to raise revenue instead.

WindsweptEgret · 10/06/2019 18:38

No, I cancelled mine as we were never watching any live tv, just Netflix. It would be the over 75s who would watch the most tv, I'd have thought.

PinkSpring · 10/06/2019 18:38

Nope!

It should be means tested, most over 75's I know are wealthy and can easily afford to pay for a TV licence themselves.

I think it's right that they shouldn't automatically get it for free just because they are over 75.

NigellasGuest · 10/06/2019 18:39

Yes, means test it. Less well off pensioners should have a free licence. But those like my own parents, in their eighties and rolling in money, no way.

CyberController · 10/06/2019 18:39

No but then I don't have a TV license anyway. I would be surprised it it's still about when I'm 75, at least not in it's current form.

It doesn't make sense to me that wealthy over 75s get it free and poor under 75s don't.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 10/06/2019 18:40

Absolutely not. Why on earth should they get it free?

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/06/2019 18:41

Absolutely not, poor pensioners get them for free.
It’s already abhorrent that a pensioner couple receive over a hundred pounds a week more than an unemployed couple.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 10/06/2019 18:42

I'd be happy to pay more for people who are on the bones of their arses broke, any age. Not rich pensioners.

TooTrueToBeGood · 10/06/2019 18:43

Nope. It should be means tested or scrapped altogether. With your proposal, someone on NMW or benefits with a family to support would potentially be subsidising the license of somebody with no dependents, their mortgage paid and substantial pension/savings.

maddiemookins16mum · 10/06/2019 18:44

Hundreds of thousands can easily afford it. A fair few will still get it free but I feel for those who will struggle because they don’t quite meet the criteria for pension credit.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 10/06/2019 18:46

Why would you? Poor pensioners will still get it free via pension credit. Why buy TV licences for people who can afford it themselves, many of whom will be richer than you? If you want to donate money, there are far better charitable causes.

cosytoaster · 10/06/2019 18:47

No, definitely not. My dad's income is about the same as mine. I'm a single parent and keep two kids, pay a mortgage and run a car on mine. He doesn't have any of those outgoings and could easily afford to pay for a licence.

mum2jakie · 10/06/2019 18:48

No I wouldn't. There are plenty of social causes that need more investment than pensioners right to watch TV for free!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 10/06/2019 18:49

No. There are many pensioners with way more disposable income than me.

It's a shame that this nice gesture can't continue, but I want the Government to put more money back in Local Authority budgets and put an end to the hideous austerity that we have been suffering for way too long.

The crises in schools, social care and the NHS is way more pressing imho.

ginghamstarfish · 10/06/2019 18:52

No, surely many in that age bracket are wealthy compared to younger people. Yes, it should be means tested, same as winter fuel allowance etc for the same reason - but I understand that means testing costs more than just giving it to all in that age group. My PILS are wealthy and each year donate their winter fuel allowance to that well known charity, the local golf club Hmm I don't have a licence nowadays but always thought this.

Kummerspeck · 10/06/2019 18:54

No, I'm afraid I also think the over 75s have had many advantages in life and most don't need this. My ILs have a higher pension than any of their grandchildren and partners earn, plus they got student grants rather than loans and benefitted from appreciating property and investments

anitagreen · 10/06/2019 18:55

Funny story my Nan is 79 now but when I was at her house once Tv license rang and asked her where the payment was as she had forgot to pay, a man on the phone asked her to switch the tv off right now or she would be arrested for illegally watching it. She told them to piss off and the next month she was exempt from paying. Not that funny now I've typed it but we still talk about it now Grin

youkiddingme · 10/06/2019 18:56

I think it's time they scrapped the blooming TV licence and go with adverts. I really resent paying it, there's not much on that's any good anyway.

Invisimamma · 10/06/2019 18:57

No. All of the over 75s I know are far far better off than me.

topcat2014 · 10/06/2019 18:58

I would scrap the licence fee and bring in advertising instead. Surely it is out of touch with reality now.

(and I am a radio 4 listener)

sqirrelfriends · 10/06/2019 18:59

Nope, how much am I likely to get for free at 75+?

Not a lot

donquixotedelamancha · 10/06/2019 19:01

Good news. The BBC have seen your posts and they have agreed to do as you ask. Only those getting pension credit will now receive the a free licence.

@OP. No. I would not pay to subsidise the licence of people receiving more income than my job from their investments. I think the new system is the fair way.

PristineCondition · 10/06/2019 19:01

Scrap it. It's a dinosaur.

cptartapp · 10/06/2019 19:01

Absolutely not. I'm already subsidising en masse, simply be virtue of age, their public transport, eye tests, dental care, prescriptions, heating, entry fees, etc etc. Millions of whom can very well afford all this themselves. PIL recently told us they have more money coming in now than when FIL was working. MIL hasn't worked for at all for fifty years. This sentiment of poor old pensioners had to stop, it's extremely decisive.

DecomposingComposers · 10/06/2019 19:02

Nope. Already have to pay for ours, and one each for our IDs in their accommodation. Sorry, but I'm not paying for pensioners too.
